On November 13, many parents of Gifted High School, Ho Chi Minh City National University happily shared on social media that the school had implemented a regulation prohibiting students from using cell phones.

Accordingly, when entering the classroom, all students must leave their phones in a glass cabinet and lock it. Only when the subject teacher requests, students are allowed to take out their phones for studying purposes.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the evening of November 13, Dr. Tran Nam Dung, vice principal of the Gifted High School, said: "Allowing students to use phones during class can easily lead to them being distracted and doing their own things.

On the teachers' side, they also feel uncomfortable when they see students using their phones for personal purposes while they are teaching. Therefore, the school requires students at both campuses not to use their phones during class time."

"However, the school does not ban it 100%. We have equipped each class with a transparent glass cabinet with a number for students to store their phones. Only when the subject teacher requests, students can take out their phones to look up information, do homework... Outside of class time, the school does not ban it, students can use their phones as needed" - Mr. Dung added.

It is known that many secondary and high schools in Ho Chi Minh City have been applying regulations prohibiting students from using phones during class without the permission of teachers. Moreover, many schools also require students not to use phones during recess. This regulation is to create conditions for students to increase communication and connection with each other.

The ban on students using cell phones in school is agreed upon and supported by the majority of parents.

Don't let phones turn students into "prisoners"

On September 5, speaking at the opening ceremony of the new school year 2024 - 2025 of the Gifted High School, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan - Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University - emphasized: "Using phones to search for information for studying is good. But don't let phones silently turn students into "prisoners" of social networks and games.

This invisible prison can bury your youth, ambitions and aspirations. Use your phone less, avoid trivial temptations, and focus your mind on extraordinary tasks. I want Talent High School to be a place where there are no cell phones in the classroom."
