(Dan Tri) - China is ready to support the United Nations' multinational framework on nuclear arms control together with Russia and the United States.

"China is willing to cooperate with all parties and firmly supports the multilateral arms control mechanism established under the United Nations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press conference on February 14, commenting on US President Donald Trump's plan to discuss nuclear arms control with the leaders of Russia and China.
The spokesman stressed that Beijing pursues a no-first-use nuclear weapons policy, adopts a self-defense strategy, and maintains nuclear forces at the minimum level necessary to ensure national security.
"China is not engaging in an arms race with any country," he added.
According to Mr. Guo, the US and Russia own more than 90% of the world's nuclear arsenal, so these two countries "have specific responsibilities." He stressed that the reduction of stockpiles should take into account the need to ensure global strategic balance.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that denuclearization would be the goal of his second term. He declared his support for moves towards denuclearization and that there was no reason to build nuclear weapons.
The White House owner said he had reached an agreement with Mr. Putin on reducing nuclear weapons during his first term, and that China was also "very open" to that, but the effort failed when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out.
The United States under the leadership of former President Joe Biden's administration has pushed China to stop refusing to negotiate nuclear weapons but to no avail.
President Trump said he would take a fresh look at the issue. He wants to talk to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping about imposing limits on nuclear arsenals, and then possibly look toward a three-way meeting.
He did not give a specific timeline for such discussions, but hoped to begin in the "not too distant future."
"There's no reason for us to spend almost $1 trillion on the military. There's no reason for you to spend $400 billion, China will be at $400 billion. I think we can solve this, we can use this money for other things," Trump commented.
He believes that where the meeting takes place is not important, what is important is the final result.
"We have so many (nuclear weapons), we can even destroy the world 50 times, 100 times. China is trying to catch up because they are basically behind, but in five or six years, they will be far ahead," Mr. Trump said, referring to the size of Washington and Beijing's nuclear arsenals.
China has been a major topic in President Trump’s first weeks in office, accounting for more than a third of the more than 80 executive orders and major actions he has signed so far. Trump has announced a 10% tariff on all Chinese goods imported into the US as part of a comprehensive trade package.
