China raises “most pressing issue” in Russia conflict

At present, the most urgent issue and most realistic goal in the Ukraine crisis is to defuse tensions as soon as possible, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.

Wang made the comments on July 16 during a phone call with Hungarian Foreign Minister and Foreign Economic Relations Minister Peter Szijjarto, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The call followed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's visit to China earlier this month, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and the two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine.

"At present, the most urgent issue and the most realistic goal in the Ukraine crisis is to de-escalate tensions as soon as possible," Wang Yi told Peter Szijjarto.

China's top diplomat said Beijing was willing to "join hands with Hungary to rally more pro-peace forces, put forward more reasonable ideas and push the situation toward a political solution".

Praising Hungary for playing a "constructive role in brokering peace", Wang said: "All parties to the conflict in Ukraine must reach consensus as soon as possible on the principles of not expanding the battlefield, not escalating hostilities and no side adding fuel to the fire, so as to create conditions for a ceasefire and resumption of peace talks."

For his part, Foreign Minister Szijjarto informed Mr. Wang of his views on the current situation, especially the Ukraine crisis and Hungary's recent related efforts, and said that China is an important force supporting the promotion of peace.

Hungary is also ready to cooperate with China to prevent the conflict from escalating and create conditions for a political solution, Szijjarto also said.

Since Hungary assumed the rotating EU presidency earlier this month, Prime Minister Orban has visited Russia, Ukraine and China, and met former President Donald Trump in the US last week.

Mr Orban said Mr Trump was ready to act “immediately” as a peace broker in the Russia-Ukraine conflict if the leading Republican was elected US president in November.

Mr Orban's visits to Ukraine, Russia, China and the US were billed by him as a "peace mission" aimed at ending Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, which has lasted more than two years.

Hungary, which takes over the EU's rotating presidency for six months starting on July 1, argued that Mr Orban had made the visits not on behalf of the EU but only in his capacity as Hungarian prime minister.
