The writing contest “Union Arms” is an initiative initiated by Labor and Union Magazine, originating from touching stories about the care and concern of union officials and organizations for union members and workers in difficult circumstances. Thanks to those warm arms, many people have overcome challenges and risen up in life firmly and persistently.
The writing contest “Trade Union Arms” was launched from October 31, 2023 to September 30, 2024, attracting more than 1,700 entries. The preliminary round jury selected the 35 best entries for the final round. As a result, the Organizing Committee awarded 1 First Prize, 2 Second Prizes, 3 Third Prizes, 5 Encouragement Prizes and 3 Special Prizes.
Permanent Vice President of Vietnam Journalists Association Nguyen Duc Loi presented First Prize to author Do Thi Quynh Giang.
The work “Forever That Arm” by author Do Thi Quynh Giang is the story of a female union official in Yen Bai. Ms. Giang has always taken care of and supported union members and workers in difficult circumstances, but now, she herself has fallen into a situation that could not be more difficult (her son has cancer, Ms. Giang herself also has cancer. During the recent Typhoon Yagi, the house that sheltered the mother and her three children completely collapsed).
At that time, the trade unions at all levels had a campaign within the trade union organization and the community. That call received great support from many trade union officials and the community. The story is like a “double” embrace, an “arm within an arm”. It is this meaning that the work written by the insider was selected by the Organizing Committee and the Jury to be awarded the First Prize.
The contest for creating communication products on drug prevention and control, jointly organized by the Propaganda Department of the General Confederation of Labor and Trade Union Magazine from July 28, 2024 to October 10, 2024, also received 1,125 entries, including 498 articles, 418 Infographics, 188 videos and 21 photo series.
Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor Ngo Duy Hieu presented awards to the winning authors.
In particular, the video genre shows meticulous investment from the script building, acting organization to talent and creativity. Some videos are built in the style of cartoons, suitable for the target audience such as preschool teachers creating videos suitable for kindergarten students, or Ninh Binh drug rehabilitation center communicating to people going through rehabilitation. Many works in the form of infographics and photo series using AI technology also show the dynamism and creativity of workers in applying information technology...
The video work by author Duong Van Thai, Chairman of the Trade Union of Industrial Zones of Thai Nguyen province (under the Thai Nguyen Provincial Labor Federation) was awarded First Prize.
Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi, Permanent Vice President of Vietnam Journalists Association, spoke at the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, journalist Nguyen Duc Loi, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said: “Both competitions have special meanings. Many of the participating authors are workers and laborers, which is a special thing that few competitions have. They are not journalists, but they write about their friends and colleagues. The stories that entered and won the awards were very touching, many of which left a strong impression on readers and viewers.”
“I hope the contest will continue to be held and raised in terms of scale, awards, organization, and the Vietnam Journalists Association is always ready to coordinate the organization. The Professional Committee will be the focal point for coordination with the Labor Magazine and the Trade Union. In the coming time, in addition to promoting the award, the Organizing Committee can study the contest for professional journalists and trade union members, and can separate it into two separate contestants... from there, study the appropriate award structure,” journalist Nguyen Duc Loi shared.
