The duck catching festival of Lai Yen village (Hoai Duc district, Hanoi) is held with the concept of healthy sports and praying for good irrigation, good crops, and healthy and talented children in the family.
Every year on January 12, the Spring Festival of Lai Yen Commune, Hoai Duc District, Hanoi is held in a jubilant and bustling atmosphere with many interesting games. Among them, the folk game that attracts the most locals and tourists from all over the world is duck catching. This is a folk game of Lai Yen people that has existed for decades.
The organizers said that the number of people participating in the duck catching contest has been increasing over the years. This year, there were nearly 30 teams competing in the duck catching contest, each team had 3 players from different villages in the commune competing together.
According to the rules, each team will have 10 minutes to compete in catching ducks in the lake. The ducks in the competition are all selected from large, strong ducks that are thrown into the lake by the organizers first. After that, the person in charge of the competition gives the signal for the young men to jump into the lake and herd and catch the ducks.
Normally, teams often split into 3 groups to surround and capture, slowly approaching the right time to capture the duck. However, there are some ducks that are very agile, constantly flying and diving underwater, causing difficulties for the teams. Therefore, each team needs to calculate reasonable tactics to be able to catch the duck.
The duck catching contest attracted a lot of spectators because of the variety of activities and situations, so there was no more empty space around the lake. The cheers and encouragement made the festival atmosphere more bustling and exciting.
Not only a folk game, the duck catching contest in early spring of Lai Yen commune is also a long-standing traditional culture of the local people. For them, the contest is a bridge to preserve and promote the good cultural values of the previous generation./.
