The Vu Lan - Filial Piety & Nation event has been held since 2014 with social security activities, community-oriented, associated with historical events, milestones celebrating major holidays of the country.
Press conference to inform about the program "Vu Lan - Filial Piety and Nation in 2024"
The program selects appropriate content for each year, but does not go beyond the message of honoring the spirit of filial piety, cultural traditions in society, reminding the younger generations to remember the upbringing and birth of grandparents - parents - ancestors as well as repaying the great contributions of national heroes, predecessors and those who have contributed to the Fatherland.
Speaking at the press conference introducing this year's program, Most Venerable, Dr. Thich Gia Quang - Vice Chairman of the Executive Council, Head of the Central Information and Communications Department, Vietnam Buddhist Sangha affirmed that filial piety has always been a noble moral value, the foundation for all development in life.
According to the Venerable, filial piety in Buddhism is not only limited to the scope of parental love but is also fully mentioned with the Four Great Graces: Grace of nation and society, grace of parents, grace of the Three Jewels and teachers, and grace of all living beings.
Venerable Thich Gia Quang shared: “The annual Vu Lan ceremony is an opportunity for every Buddhist to remember the kindness of their parents in giving birth and raising them, and at the same time express their filial piety through practical actions.
We can repay our parents' kindness by: regularly visiting and taking care of them, especially when they are old and sick; listening to and sharing our parents' thoughts and wishes; helping our parents with housework and labor; having filial, polite, and respectful words and actions; studying, practicing morality, and striving to succeed in life to please our parents."
According to the Venerable, Vu Lan is not only a Buddhist holiday but also a common holiday of the entire nation, demonstrating the fine traditions of "When drinking water, remember its source", "When eating fruit, remember the person who planted the tree", reminding each person of noble moral values, filial piety, and the spirit of gratitude and repayment.
The monk emphasized: "Filial piety is not only the responsibility of each child but also the responsibility of the whole society. We need to join hands to build a filial society, where each child knows how to love, respect and repay their parents' kindness."
This year, the Central Information and Communications Department, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, in coordination with Sen Cong Joint Stock Company, organized the program to celebrate major national holidays such as: 134th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2024); 79th anniversary of the successful August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2024); 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024); 77th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2024); Welcome the Vu Lan Festival PL.2568 - DL.2024 and especially towards welcoming the United Nations Vesak Festival in 2025 hosted by Vietnam.
Vu Lan Art Program - Filial Piety & Nation 2023
The Organizing Committee innovated the structure of the art program in conjunction with a series of social security activities and the journey towards Dien Bien Phu on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory and the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024).
According to director Diep Van, the program will be built with a tight structure, from content, sound, lighting to stage design. The music will include Buddhist music, secular music and classical music. All performances will be staged to highlight the meaning of "Filial piety culture" with the participation and advice of some of the leading directors in the Vietnamese music and culture industry.
The performances will also bring the audience meaningful spiritual and artistic experiences. In addition to the artistic part, the program will also have exchanges on the topics of "Vu Lan" and "Filial piety".
In particular, before the art exchange night, the Organizing Committee will make a pilgrimage "Following the footsteps of the Dien Bien soldiers of the past" in mid-July to burn incense in gratitude at the A1 National Cemetery, commemorate the heroic martyrs who died on the Dien Bien battlefield, give charity gifts to families with meritorious services and difficulties in the locality such as donating a canteen to a kindergarten, giving gifts and savings books to some veterans...
Venerable Thich Gia Quang said that the program will be an opportunity for units, individuals and organizations to join hands to show their concern through practical actions, demonstrating the spirit of harmony and connection between religion and life, between Vietnamese Buddhism and the country.
Within the framework of the art exchange night, the Organizing Committee will present gifts and savings books to some relatives of martyrs participating in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, lonely elderly people with no place to rely on and people facing difficulties in life./.
