Early in the morning, young people in the neighborhood came to Mr. Nguyen Minh Hieu's house (residing in Huu Thoi hamlet, Bien Bach Dong commune, Thoi Binh district, Ca Mau) to participate in harvesting giant freshwater prawns in the rice fields.

Mr. Hieu's family has about 1.5 hectares of land for raising giant freshwater prawns intercropped with rice. After more than 5 months of raising prawns, the family harvested prawns, bringing in an additional income of more than 50 million VND, in addition to the money from selling rice.

“This year, shrimp harvest is good and prices are better than last year. The rice-shrimp model helps my family earn more than 150 million/year,” Mr. Hieu shared.

Sharing the joy of a successful shrimp season, Mr. Nguyen Van Dien (residing in Le Giao hamlet, Bien Bach Dong commune) also said that his family has about 2.5 hectares of land for shrimp-rice farming. This year, the green-legged shrimp crop is of good quality, farmers make a profit and the price has increased by nearly 30,000 VND/kg compared to last year. After deducting all expenses, the family has a profit of more than 60 million VND.

The price of 15 green-legged shrimp/kg ranges from 130,000 - 140,000 VND/kg.

When rice is ready to be harvested, it is also the time when Ca Mau farmers start harvesting shrimp, and after the shrimp is finished, they will harvest rice.

After being caught, the shrimp will be transported immediately to the size classification area, ensuring that the shrimp are still fresh and alive.

People will use machines to run around the canals in the shrimp ponds to stir up the mud after draining most of the water, so that the shrimp can float to the shore.

When the mud is stirred up, the shrimp will come up to the shore. People just need to use their hands to scoop the shrimp and put them in bags or buckets.
