Portraying the personality of today's 4.0 soldier
The book “The Fragrant Fame of Uncle Ho’s Soldiers” (People’s Army Publishing House, 2024) by Colonel, journalist Nguyen Van Hai – People’s Army Newspaper has many new and interesting points. Writer Phung Van Khai – Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Army Literature Magazine commented: “The book “The Fragrant Fame of Uncle Ho’s Soldiers” by journalist Nguyen Van Hai is one of the works with a profound, comprehensive and dialectical view of military life, the mission of soldiers in war and in peace” .
The book is a collection of his selected journalistic works on the topic of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers" published over the past 10 years, with 2 parts: Part I - "Preserving and promoting the cultural values of Uncle Ho's Soldiers" and Part II - "Footprints of soldiers in all regions of the Fatherland". The two parts of the book blend and complement each other, forming a unified whole, from depicting the appearance, demeanor, and noble character of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers" with unique values to stories expressing the will, spirit of work, persistent dedication, and creativity of today's cadres and soldiers...
From generalizations into profound viewpoints and perspectives with thorough explanations and analysis to vivid practical stories that breathe life... that the author has experienced, witnessed, and felt. As Major General, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ba Duong - Member of the Central Theoretical Council commented: "In the book, besides the works on historical education and traditions of the Army with useful, interesting summaries, theoretical and practical values, there are also reportage and memoir works depicting the beauty of the portrait of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" living and fighting in peacetime with many aspects, dimensions, diversity and richness. Through the genre of reportage and memoir, the author has worked hard to explore and sketch the appearance, personality, character, will, determination and gestures and actions of soldiers, no matter where they are, what they do, in any position, they are all willing to wholeheartedly serve the Fatherland and the People" .
And he also affirmed that the issue raised by the book is very valuable, because it is a typical military culture of the Vietnamese people in the new era.
Journalist Nguyen Van Hai received the C prize of the 17th National Press Award.
That characteristic is like a red thread running through the works of journalist Nguyen Van Hai, thereby helping the public understand more deeply the unique and special cultural and humanistic values of the title "Uncle Ho's Soldiers": "Like a river that deposits alluvium every day to make crops grow more lush, "Uncle Ho's Soldiers" over time become increasingly steadfast in their mettle and fighting spirit, pure in their morality and soul, developed in their intelligence and culture, and clearly show themselves to be the vanguard force in the cause of protecting and building the country" (Bright title - title "Uncle Ho's Soldiers").
Of course, the conclusions that journalist Nguyen Van Hai gave are not new, but they have been carefully distilled, from truth to real-life practice, thereby brilliantly depicting the beautiful qualities of today's soldiers and warriors. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tu commented on this book very sharply: "The words and sentences in this book are not necessarily full of life, life, and intelligence, but are full of passion, a spirit of a soldier who is responsible for explaining and deepening the simple yet noble beauty that only exists in Uncle Ho's Army."
Both intelligent and experienced, he has a deep love for soldiers.
That simple yet noble beauty becomes even more convincing when expressed through the simple, easy-to-understand writing style of a journalist - soldier who has spent 32 years in the army, holding both a gun and a pen, with long footprints on every road from the mountains to the remote islands... and is reflected from the perspective of culture and journalism - media.
Reading books is like meeting people, writer Nguyen Van Hai is not flowery or "big-headed" even though his topics are of contemporary significance. He also does not write in a conventional way of thinking but is flexible in each article even though there are many old stories that have been tested for decades. Therefore, the book still has its own appeal and life when the writer knows how to renew an old topic, carefully selects valuable details without being clichéd, praises but is not bland or monotonous...
And to do so is certainly not easy, requiring a professional writer, both intelligent and experienced, and with a deep love for soldiers... Journalist, Colonel Nguyen Van Hai has gathered all of these, and has brought them into this book with the responsibility and mission of a "loyal secretary of the times".

A successful work is not only the effort of the writer but also the subtle grasp of the reader's taste and the right time. This book was published in the context of some individuals taking advantage of the image of Uncle Ho's soldiers to make more and more profits on the Internet, causing a significant impact on the reputation and honor of officers and soldiers in the Vietnam People's Army... which is a "plus point".
Obviously, each person, each day spreading beautiful images, true to the nature of revolutionary soldiers is an effective solution for the journey of fighting and refuting the wrong and hostile viewpoints. The simple yet noble beauty of the soldier in the book of journalist - soldier Nguyen Van Hai is a valuable document, a way to look at, reflect on and defeat the fake news, bad and toxic news that are currently widespread.
The book affirms an immutable truth: in bombs and bullets, in the midst of storms or on the front lines against the pandemic... there is no place in this country where Uncle Ho's soldiers are absent. It is because they are close to the people, respect the people, and are willing to sacrifice for the people that generations of cadres and soldiers have received the people's full trust. Therefore, it is impossible for a few simple events to easily shake feelings, fade the tradition of close ties between the army and the people as well as the dignity of soldiers in peacetime...
I would like to conclude the article about the book with the author's sincere confession, which is also the message he brings to the public: "Thanks to the traditions and qualities of "Uncle Ho's Soldiers", which have nurtured and enriched me with positive energy in life and work, and contributed to training the personality of a soldier journalist who is "both red and professional". Through the book, I also want to add a voice, a perspective, and a testimony to continue affirming the unique cultural values of the title and title of Uncle Ho's Soldiers, while spreading the good traditions of our Army to readers...".
