Looking to measure the carbon footprint of pangasius products, what is a carbon footprint?

That is one of the goals of the pangasius industry in 2025 to help businesses identify emission points and come up with effective emission reduction solutions.

Pangasius fish exports have reached 1.5 billion USD

Reporting at the conference summarizing the pangasius industry in 2024 and discussing solutions to implement tasks in 2025, recently organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in coordination with the People's Committee of Dong Thap province, a representative of the Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that in 2024, the pangasius industry will face many difficulties and challenges such as the prices of some goods and input materials for aquaculture development remaining high. Political conflicts have caused logistics costs to increase; along with competition from some countries that are taking market share in the Muslim market; autonomy in the supply of food originating from pangasius in neighboring countries has caused consumer demand to stagnate in many importing countries. However, the pangasius industry has still achieved positive results.

According to a report from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), pangasius export turnover as of October 15, 2024 reached 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% over the same period in 2023. The total pangasius farming area in 2024 is estimated at 5,370 hectares (equal to 95% compared to the same period in 2023).

Total pangasius output harvested in 2024 is estimated at 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. The purchase price of raw pangasius in the first 11 months of 2024 has always been maintained at 26,000-27,000 VND/kg.

There are 1,920 pangasius breeding and production facilities nationwide, including 2 parent breeding and production facilities; 76 breeding facilities and 1,842 breeding facilities for pangasius fry to fingerlings. The broodstock production capacity reaches over 30,000 fish/year, meeting the demand for breeding. In 2024, the fisheries sector inspected and maintained production conditions for 38/61 breeding facilities and 81/97 breeding facilities.

By the end of September 2024, a total of 1,129 VietGAP aquaculture certificates had been issued with a farming area of 10,419 hectares in 62 provinces and cities nationwide. Of which, pangasius accounted for 32.3% of the number of certificates and 31.9% of the certified area.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Luan, Director of the Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), despite many achievements, value-added products in the pangasius industry still account for a small proportion, mainly frozen products.

Furthermore, the dependence on a few major export markets such as the US, China and some ASEAN countries puts the pangasius industry at a disadvantage if these markets change their policies or have stricter requirements on quality and food safety. The lack of coordination and excessive competition among Vietnamese processors and exporters, along with uneven quality, has affected the reputation and brand of Vietnamese pangasius products.

The rate of pangasius breeding facilities that have been inspected and granted certificates of eligibility is still low (accounting for 5.3%); the cost of producing raw pangasius is increasing due to high prices of input materials such as feed, fuel, and labor costs.

Aiming for emission reduction

In 2025, the pangasius industry aims to reach 1.65 million tons of farmed pangasius output, with an export turnover value of 2 billion USD; proactively produce and supply over 70% of the demand for selected parent pangasius; build a chain linking production, processing, and consumption, ensuring stable output for over 30% of aquaculture product output; encourage the expansion of farming areas according to standards to create high-quality products, ensure food safety, and meet the needs and requirements of the consumer market.

To achieve this goal, Mr. Tran Dinh Luan said, the aquaculture industry continues to select and improve the quality of pangasius breeds, especially for traits of salt tolerance and disease resistance to provide healthy breeds that can adapt to changing climate conditions and improve disease resistance.

Pay attention to research and gradually replace fishmeal and fish oil in feed production with many types of alternative feed ingredients of plant origin, insects, microalgae, microbial protein, and seaweed with potential in the future, contributing to gradually reducing dependence on fishmeal and trash fish as well as balancing essential amino acids and fatty acids in the diet.

Building a brand for Vietnamese pangasius products through technological innovation, strict quality control from farming to processing and obtaining certifications related to food safety, greenhouse gases, environmental safety, and religion (Halal), helping to ensure consistent product quality and increase the value of the pangasius industry.

In order to develop the pangasius industry sustainably, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien requested the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities that raise pangasius to continue to properly manage farming conditions and ensure food safety for commercial pangasius farming facilities, and prevent people from arbitrarily buying drugs and chemicals of unknown origin online, or drugs for treating diseases for humans, livestock, and poultry for use in aquaculture.

Research institutes and universities continue to research and improve the genetic quality of pangasius breeds and distribute selected parent pangasius breeds to hatchery facilities.

Vietnam Pangasius Association and VASEP Association proactively seek resources from relevant parties to conduct research on the pangasius consumption market, consumer eating habits, seafood consumption trends and provide them to members to support businesses in determining product development directions, seeking export opportunities, and improving product quality.

Consider and gradually implement measures to measure the carbon footprint of pangasius products, determining the amount of CO2 emitted during the production, processing and distribution process. This helps businesses identify emission points and propose effective emission reduction solutions.

"In addition to traditional markets such as the US, EU, and China, businesses need to seek and develop new potential markets such as the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and South America. Pangasius products can be exported to Muslim markets if they meet Halal certification requirements. Therefore, developing Halal products will help increase market share in Middle Eastern, North African, and Southeast Asian countries," Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien emphasized.

Carbon footprint is the total level of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the production and use of industrial products or services by humans and also the final life cycle of such a product or service.

Every person and every organization and business has a carbon footprint and what manufacturers and business owners need to be concerned about is how to not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also save money in the long run.
