Information from Hue Central Hospital this evening, October 7, said that doctors at this hospital have just successfully performed the first two allogeneic bone marrow transplants on patients with thalassemia.

The first transplant was for Tran Viet Th. (42 months old) from Da Nang. Since the age of 2, Th. was diagnosed with thalassemia and had to go to the hospital for monthly blood transfusions.

After HLA testing, Th. was confirmed to be a perfect match with his biological sister. The team of doctors at Hue Central Hospital, under the guidance of Professor Lawrence Faulkner (from DKMS - Germany), successfully performed a bone marrow transplant for him.

Under the guidance of Professor Lawrence Faulkner from DKMS (Germany), the team of doctors at Hue Central Hospital successfully performed a bone marrow transplant for Th.

Despite the rare complication of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage, thanks to the timely care and detection of the medical team, Th. has recovered and is now discharged from the hospital, with a regular follow-up appointment at the hospital.

The second case of successful bone marrow transplant and discharge from the hospital is Pham Le Hoang V. (8 years old). V. was diagnosed with thalassemia when he was 17 months old and had to go to the hospital regularly for blood transfusions.

Professor, Doctor, Physician Pham Nhu Hiep said: "The success of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation at Hue Central Hospital opens up many new opportunities for children with genetic and serious diseases."

After testing, V. was a perfect match with her sister, so she underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. The transplant was successful, although she had mild neutropenia but recovered quickly.

According to Professor, Doctor, Physician Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, thalassemia is a genetic disease that causes microcytic anemia, seriously affecting the physical and mental development of children.

“In severe cases, children have to rely on regular blood transfusions, leading to many difficulties in life. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is considered the optimal treatment method, providing the opportunity for complete recovery for children, helping them to live healthy lives without blood transfusions,” Professor Pham Nhu Hiep shared.

Two children with thalassemia quickly recovered after receiving allogeneic bone marrow transplants at Hue Central Hospital.

“The success of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation at Hue Central Hospital not only brings hope to children with thalassemia but also opens up treatment prospects for other diseases requiring allogeneic bone marrow transplantation such as bone marrow failure, congenital immunodeficiency, and recurrent cancer…”, Professor Hiep added.

Doctors at Hue Central Hospital said that this is the first time an allogeneic bone marrow transplant has been successfully performed in the Central Highlands region, and Hue Central Hospital is the second unit in the country to apply this advanced technique.

This marks a major step forward in the application of allogeneic stem cell transplantation, opening up many new opportunities for children with genetic and serious diseases.
