More localities set English as the third subject for 10th grade entrance exam

Many provinces have officially announced that the third subject in the 10th grade exam in the 2025-2026 school year is English.

Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality in the country to set English as the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam. According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, this year's 10th grade entrance exam in the city includes three subjects: Literature, Math and Foreign Language (mainly English).

Of which, Literature and Math have a test time of 120 minutes each, Foreign Language has a test time of 90 minutes. The exam is expected to take place in early June 2025. Previously, keeping Foreign Language as the third exam subject for grade 10 was proposed many times by Ho Chi Minh City.

After Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Duong is the second locality to announce the third subject of the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, this province has chosen English. In recent years, Hai Duong has reduced the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam from four to three, including Math, Literature, and English. Therefore, the upcoming 10th grade exam will basically keep the same number of subjects as in previous years.

The Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has just issued a document announcing the third exam subject for admission to grade 10 of high school, basically keeping stable with 3 exam subjects: Literature, Math and English.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, the Literature exam is in essay format, with a duration of 120 minutes. The Math exam is a combination of multiple choice and essay (the multiple choice part accounts for 30%, the essay part accounts for 70% of the total exam score), with a duration of 120 minutes.

English subject combines multiple choice and written test, the test consists of 2 parts: multiple choice test accounts for 60% of total test score (taken on multiple choice answer sheet) and written test (with listening content) accounts for 40% of total test score (taken on test paper), test time is 60 minutes.

Candidates taking the entrance exam to Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, in addition to the three exams: Math, Literature, and English, must take a fourth exam in their desired specialized subject.

Recently, after a long wait, the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City confirmed that the subjects in the entrance exam for grade 10 of high school in the 2025-2026 school year include: Math; Literature and Foreign Language. Candidates can choose English or French to take the exam.

In Nghe An, the Director of the Department of Education and Training informed that the province will have three exams: Literature, Math, and Foreign Language. Choosing Foreign Language as the third exam subject is to create conditions to promote the movement of learning foreign languages ​​in schools and improve the quality of this subject.

Although not yet officially announced, the localities of Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, Tien Giang, and Dong Nai plan to choose English as the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam. This is to help motivate and encourage students to study this subject more in the context of international integration and make English the second language at school.

In Hanoi , recently, social networks have spread information that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has finalized the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year as the Natural Science group. The above information has received much attention from public opinion. However, immediately after that, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training confirmed that the above information is not accurate.

At this time, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has not announced the third exam subject for the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools in the 2025-2026 school year.

According to the regulations on junior high school and high school admissions recently issued by the Ministry of Education and Training with Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT, the third subject and exam will be selected by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed by scores in the junior high school general education program, announced no later than March 31 every year.
