New points in university admissions in 2025 will create more opportunities for candidates to enter university

On February 18, the Lao Dong Newspaper launched the 24th "Bringing schools to candidates" program - 2025 with an online talk show on the topic: "New points in enrollment 2025". Experts and representatives of universities informed about important new features in the university and college enrollment regulations 2025, admission methods, tuition fees, scholarships... of universities.

Two important new points with strong impact

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assurance (VNU-HCM), said that the 2025 enrollment regulations have 6 important contents, including 2 new points: no early admission and requiring schools to convert equivalent admission scores between admission methods and admission combinations.

Regarding the regulation of eliminating early admission, Dr. Le Trung Dao, Vice Principal of the University of Finance and Marketing, said that he completely agreed with the elimination of early admission, which would completely overcome the previous painful problems. In previous years, many students were subjective because they had been admitted early, so they neglected their studies.

Dr. Tran Dinh Ly, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, said that this year's adjustment of the admission regulations is aimed at ensuring the rights and fairness of candidates. Among them, the most discussed issue is the abolition of early admission.

"I agree with the removal of early admission. Removing early admission does not affect the admission process much, especially for schools with good and quality admissions. This helps ensure more fairness among candidates. Most of the adjustments in the exam regulations are related to technical factors. Candidates will have less trouble, but the school will take more time and need to calculate more carefully. For candidates, these changes are more convenient when they only register their wishes once" - this expert analyzed.

In addition, the new point in the admission regulations is not to control the number of admission combinations. This is to help make it more consistent with the 2018 General Education Program. However, introducing too many admission combinations also causes many difficulties for training institutions. The conversion of the same score scale has received many opinions.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh said that there is currently no general conversion formula. Therefore, each school has a different conversion rate. In addition, each method has its own advantages, one method may be more reliable than another, for example, considering academic records has the lowest reliability when there is no uniform assessment. Therefore, schools will be flexible in conversion to find the best solution. "The conversion of scores is decided by each training institution. Therefore, each school will have a different conversion rate, candidates need to pay attention" - Dr. Chinh emphasized.

Will the transcript review be affected?

There are also many changes in the admission method based on transcripts, specifically, candidates must use the results of the entire 12th grade year instead of using the scores of 3-5 semesters as before for admission. According to school representatives, this regulation is appropriate.

Dr. Le Trung Dao said that the change in the regulations on considering academic records is to ensure that students must maintain their studies until the end of grade 12. The opportunity for candidates to enter university is more open to them, not narrowed.

Dr. Tran Dinh Ly said that considering academic records is a method to ensure admission for the school, increasing opportunities for candidates. Previously, the school only had a maximum of 4 admission combinations, this year the school increased to 6 admission combinations. In which, economic and legal education plays a very important role in the school's training majors. With this method, the school applies admission to all 3 training programs at the school including advanced programs, advanced programs, and standard programs.

Dr. Tran Thanh Thuong, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department - Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, informed that the school only considers transcripts of candidates graduating in 2025. Candidates graduating from high school in 2024 or earlier who want to be admitted to the school must take the high school graduation exam or the competency assessment exam.

As in previous years, schools used many different admission methods. However, from this year, the Ministry of Education and Training has stipulated that schools must convert scores between admission methods.

Don't sign up "just in case"

Dr. Tran Dinh Ly said that the annual exam and admission regulations are adjusted for the better, but the main issue is that students must discover their own abilities to find a suitable career.

According to Dr. Tran Dinh Ly, candidates first need to find out what career they like and are suitable for, then find out which majors train for that career and which schools train that major. When registering, they also need to carefully research the training programs at the school because each program has different tuition fees and study conditions. Many candidates have to change after 1-2 years of university due to incorrect registration.

Dr. Tran Dinh Ly commented that admission is an important issue to evaluate the success of career guidance programs for students and candidates.

During the admission process, candidates first need to choose a suitable career and major, then choose schools that offer training in the major they want to study and arrange their priorities based on their academic ability and finances.

If a candidate accidentally chooses an unsuitable major, they can study two programs at the same time, but this also requires proving their academic ability or retaking the exam next year. It is best for candidates to carefully consider which major is suitable before applying.

Dr. Le Trung Dao, Vice Principal of the University of Finance and Marketing, noted that candidates should review and collect information to choose a major. Currently, training is not a single major but an interdisciplinary one. "You should not follow a "hot" major that you are not suitable for, but make yourself "hot". You must update your knowledge regularly" - Dr. Dao advised.

Adjust the competency assessment test

Regarding the HCM City National University's competency assessment exam, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh said that the exam is in its 8th year and has proven to be reliable for admission.

According to Mr. Chinh, in 2025, the exam will still take place in 2 rounds, the number of questions will still be 120 with 150 minutes to do the test on paper. The exam has 3 parts: (1) Language use (Vietnamese, English); (2) mathematics; (3) scientific thinking with logical content - data analysis, scientific reasoning.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Chinh said that unlike the exam in 2024 and earlier, the exam from 2025 will have adjustments in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program. Accordingly, the exam will only be adjusted in structure. The questions in part 3 will not ask for in-depth knowledge but will provide problems, and candidates will use their reasoning ability to find the answer. This is suitable for all candidates.
