On April 12, 1979, the first coastal defense missile unit (also known as anti-ship missiles, shore missiles) of the Vietnam People's Army was established, with the name of Naval Battalion 43. On May 28, 1979, Naval Battalion 43 changed its name to Artillery Battalion B and on June 7, 1979, it was named Naval Battalion 679.

In April 1993, the unit was upgraded to Group 679 and transferred to Naval Region 1 in August 2012.
On May 22, 2013, the Ministry of National Defense decided to reorganize Group 679 into the 679 Coastal Defense Missile Brigade.

This is a new combat unit equipped with very modern weapons and equipment. After more than 3 years of establishment, the unit moved all its forces and vehicles from its original base in Hai Phong to officially set up a barracks in Phan Thiet City (Binh Thuan).

With high determination and support from Russian experts, the 681st Coastal Defense Missile Brigade has made a breakthrough in the entire army by completing the assembly and synchronous calibration of the Bastion coastal missile system and Monolis-B radar in less than 6 months.

The K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defense missile system is currently in service with the Vietnam People's Army.
