The patient is Ms. QTP, 43 years old, admitted to Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital on the morning of May 9. Through clinical examination, the doctor found that the patient had pneumonia and reduced gas exchange at the bottom of the left lung.
Chest CT scan results showed an abscess in the lower lobe of the left lung and suspected foreign body in the airway. Taking a medical history, the patient said that he had choked on food while eating rice when he was 18 years old, causing severe coughing and difficulty breathing. In recent years, the patient had to regularly go to the district health center near his home to treat pneumonia, an average of 3-4 times per year.
At Hoa Binh General Hospital, the patient received an interdisciplinary consultation: Intensive care, Respiratory, Anesthesia and resuscitation, Diagnostic imaging. Doctors performed a flexible bronchoscopy under anesthesia to examine the patient's entire airway.
"When inserting the endoscope into the lower lobe of the left lung, the doctor discovered a foreign object as big as the tip of a little finger, with many edges, covered with phlegm and pus," said Dr. Hoang Cong Tinh, Head of the hospital's Intensive Care Unit 1.

Foreign objects blocking the bronchus obstruct ventilation of the lower lobe of the left lung, accompanied by suppuration and abscess formation. In addition, the foreign object moves with breathing, rubbing against the bronchial wall causing bleeding.
The requirement now is to remove the foreign object while still ensuring breathing and not damaging the airway. After nearly 1 hour, the bone fragment was removed with the endoscope's forceps, and the pus in the lower lobe of the left lung was completely suctioned out.
Sharing with VietNamNet on May 10, Dr. Tinh said he was very surprised and had never seen a case of foreign objects stuck in the lungs for so long. This is the fifth case of a patient having a flexible bronchoscopy team at Hoa Binh General Hospital remove foreign objects from the lungs.
