Soc Trang hands over houses and land to establish Can Tho University Branch

On October 10, the People's Committee of Soc Trang province held a ceremony to hand over the house and land facilities of Soc Trang Community College with a total area of ​​nearly 20,000m2 to Can Tho University to establish a branch of Can Tho University in this province.

Previously, on April 26, the Minister of Education and Training signed a decision approving the policy of establishing a branch of Can Tho University in Soc Trang province.

The branch is expected to have a training scale of 500-2,600 students depending on the year. Of which, regular university training is 18 majors; non-regular training (work-study, distance learning, joint training) and short-term training in fields such as: Foreign languages, information technology, aquaculture, engineering technology, etc.

In addition, the branch will also train at the postgraduate level, with an expected quota of 460-600 students per year, in the fields of cultivation, animal husbandry, aquaculture, industry - construction, education, etc.

Mr. Tran Van Lau, Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province, said that the province is the only locality in the Mekong Delta that does not have a university or university branch. Therefore, the establishment of Can Tho University Branch will help train high-quality human resources, research, transfer, and apply science and technology to serve the socio-economic development of the province and neighboring localities.

"The establishment of the branch also helps students in difficult circumstances and ethnic minorities have more opportunities to study," said the Chairman of Soc Trang province, adding that Soc Trang people are also very happy because having a university branch will help make the dream of studying at university for Soc Trang students closer.

Mr. Tran Trung Tinh, Rector of Can Tho University, pledged that the school will effectively manage and use facilities, invest in infrastructure and equipment to best serve teaching, research and development.

When operating, the Can Tho University branch in Soc Trang province will meet the needs of on-site learning, shortening the travel distance for students, people, officials, civil servants and public employees to participate in university and postgraduate training classes; the number of students after graduating from high school will have more opportunities to study at university, contributing to increasing the proportion of highly qualified resources.
