Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training advises to maintain stable enrollment in grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in the next school year.

On the afternoon of March 11, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that the industry's viewpoint is to stabilize the enrollment work at the beginning of the school year 2024-2025. Therefore, the Department's leaders will advise the City People's Committee to propose to the Ministry of Education and Training to allow continued enrollment in grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted this year.

"After that, the Department will develop a roadmap to properly implement the provisions of the Education Law on specialized schools," said a Department leader.

This proposal is similar to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training's proposal a few days ago, after the Ministry of Education and Training requested the city government to direct the enrollment of 6th grade students at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in accordance with regulations.

Responding to VnExpress on March 7, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said that the 2005 Education Law stipulated that specialized schools only exist at the high school level. This content is also maintained in the 2019 Education Law. The model of junior high school blocks in specialized schools is not included in any legal regulations. However, due to historical existence, there are two schools, Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School (HCMC) and Hanoi - Amsterdam (Hanoi), that have junior high school blocks.

In 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular 05 on the regulations on the organization and operation of specialized high schools, stating that there will be no more non-specialized classes in specialized schools. Therefore, of course, non-specialized junior high school classes in specialized schools must also stop enrolling students.

The predecessor of Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted was a religious school founded by a priest to educate orphans in 1887, named Lasan Taberd. Later, the school expanded to teach students from grade 1 to grade 12. During the period 1976-1999, the school was transformed into a training place for primary school teachers for the city. In 2000, the school was named Tran Dai Nghia High School, including junior high school and high school, and became a specialized school after two years.

Every year, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted enrolls more than 500 sixth graders through an English proficiency test. The number of applications to the school is about 3,000-4,000.
