1 hectare of wild vegetables - jujube in Doi field, Mai Hung ward (Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province) of Mr. Tran Van Quan brings in an income of nearly 1 billion VND/year.

Mr. Tran Van Quan, born in 1984 in village 13, Quynh Vinh commune, Hoang Mai town, started growing jujube about 6 years ago.

In 2018, Mr. Quan returned to his hometown from the South to start a business. He noticed that wild jujube plants growing in shrimp ponds and saline soil in Quynh Di and Mai Hung wards were picked by people and sold at the market at quite high prices.

Therefore, he researched and bid for 1 hectare of saline land in Bat field, Mai Hung ward to grow jujube.

He drilled wells, invested in an automatic irrigation system, hired machines and workers to prepare the soil into rows to grow this specialty wild vegetable.

Workers of Xu Nghe Watermelon Cooperative, Hoang Mai Town (Nghe An Province) harvest watermelon to sell to other provinces and restaurants.

At first, due to lack of techniques for growing and caring for the plant, it grew slowly and wilted, so he had to pull it out.

After a period of learning, he combined growing vegetable seedlings and sowing seeds, so he propagated the vegetable to other fields. Now he has the initiative to source seeds.

However, when the jujube tree grew and produced products, Mr. Quan encountered difficulties in selling them, so he suffered a lot of losses.

Mr. Quan carefully and meticulously takes care of, weeds, and harvests the jujubes.

Due to lack of experience in harvesting and preserving, the loquat leaves are often damaged and customers do not accept them and have to throw them away.

Mr. Tran Van Quan shared: "In the beginning, it was very difficult and arduous. If I didn't have the will and determination, I wouldn't be where I am today.

I myself had to spend time and effort to research and gain experience in the process of breeding and caring for vegetables to grow and produce quality products. It took me years to do this.

With determination, Mr. Quan has continuously researched and studied the care, harvesting and preservation of jujube vegetables.

In 2021, Mr. Quan and 6 other colleagues established the Nghe An Nhot Vegetable Cooperative, of which he is the director, widely promoting the product to consumers.

Currently, Nghe An jujube is available in many provinces and cities across the country and in restaurants in the province.

To have jujube vegetables to sell every day, Mr. Quan has to plant one crop after another, harvest continuously, and sell 5-6 tons of jujube vegetables each month.

Including types of jujube sold as: sold in bulk for 10,000-15,000 VND/kg, cleaned jujube supplied to restaurants in big cities for 20,000-30,000 VND/kg.

Loquat vegetables are harvested every year for 9-10 months, with revenue reaching nearly 1 billion VND/year. In addition, the Nghe An Loquat Vegetable Cooperative also creates regular jobs for 10 workers with an average income of 6-7 million VND/month.

Water mimosa - a special wild vegetable - is carefully cared for so it grows well and has a harvest time of 9-10 months.

Loquat vegetables are grown on saline soil without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, but mainly using organic microbial fertilizers that have been composted for over 3 months to ensure quality, safety and cleanliness.

However, taking care of vegetables requires meticulous care from weeding, fertilizing, watering, and harvesting.

In the coming time, Mr. Quan will continue to expand the area of growing more jujube vegetables, building the brand of jujube vegetables from Nghe An to become a product that meets OCOP standards.

Through building the rau lot brand, we will contribute to bringing vegetable products to markets in big cities, to supermarket systems, clean vegetable stores, and to consumers nationwide.
