Australian tangerines used to be imported to Vietnam at 250,000 VND per kilogram, but now that they are in season and competing with Chinese goods, the price has dropped by half compared to the same period last year.
A survey at traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City and fruit stores showed that the retail price of Australian tangerines is currently around VND90,000-120,000 per kilogram, down by half compared to the same period last year. Many online stores even sell them for VND50,000 per kilogram, VND139,000 for 3 kilograms - the cheapest price ever.
A representative of Binh Thuan Fruit and Vegetable Company - a unit specializing in importing large quantities of imported fruit - said that this year, this fruit has many different sizes ranging from 80,000-120,000 VND per kg for a box (9 kg). With the super cheap types, customers should be careful because most of them are of poor quality.
According to this company, to distinguish between real and fake Australian tangerines, customers need to buy from reputable establishments with clear labels and declarations of origin. Counterfeit products often do not have additional labels and have strange brands.
Ms. Oanh - owner of an imported fruit store in Thu Duc city - said that Australian tangerines are abundant this season and are easier to import than in previous years, so prices have dropped sharply.
"Australian tangerines start in June and end in October-November. Every year, this fruit is a monopoly on the market, but this year, competition from Chinese products with similar designs to Australian products has caused prices to hit record lows," said Ms. Oanh.

According to a representative of the Thu Duc Agricultural Wholesale Market in Ho Chi Minh City, Australian tangerines are mostly imported by air or sea, so they do not reach the market. Currently, most of the Australian tangerines at the market are from China. This type arrives at the market in large quantities at a wholesale price of VND25,000-30,000 per kilogram. This is also the reason why the price of goods imported directly from Australia has dropped sharply.
Australian tangerines have been imported into the Vietnamese market since 2017 with retail prices of up to 250,000 VND. They come in many different sizes, so prices vary.
On the market today, this product has two types: sweet and slightly sour. The slightly sour type is due to the tangerines being harvested before the main season. Compared to Vietnamese tangerines, Australian tangerines are juicy, have less fibrous segments, thinner skin and a more distinctive aroma.
