Parents "surround" Tay Mo 3 school, demanding transparency in admission list

The Department of Education said it has not "recruited students yet", the Principal said "has accepted 1,100 students"

After nearly 11 hours of waiting at the school, from 6:20 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on August 21, nearly 400 parents met with the Principal of Tay Mo 3 Primary School, Nguyen Thi Hang.

The Board of Directors of Tay Mo 3 Primary School, including 1 principal and 2 vice principals, invited parents into the meeting room and answered related questions.

"This morning, representatives of the Department of Education and Training met and sent parents registration forms.

After the department has discussed with the school, the school will be responsible for collecting and receiving the applications, then sending all applications to the leaders and waiting for instructions.

We are waiting for instructions from our superiors. When we receive instructions, we will send a notice to parents as soon as possible," Principal Nguyen Thi Hang began.

However, parents did not agree with this general answer. Parents asked the principal to provide information on how many students the school had accepted.

In response to the request, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang said: "The school has 30 classes, each class has 35 students, so we have currently accepted 1,100 students."

Parents asked many questions, mainly focusing on 3 contents: Does the school re-enroll? What is the enrollment method? What are the enrollment conditions?

"Yesterday, the principal replied to us that the school does not have the function of recruiting students and all the students the school receives are from Tay Mo 1 Primary School.

But this morning, Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training Le Thi Thanh Tam told the press that the information was incorrect and that the school had not yet started enrolling students. Ms. Tam also asked parents to submit their application forms so that the department and district leaders could make arrangements.

Now, Ms. Hang said the school has accepted 1,100 students. So which information is correct?", parents asked.

"What does it mean if we submit our application today? Will the school re-enroll? If the school accepts the application, how many days will it take to respond? If the principal cannot respond, who will respond and when? We cannot wait without a deadline," said Mr. Le Duc Cong, representative of the parents' group.

Mr. Cong added that what parents are most concerned about right now is the enrollment plan for Tay Mo 3 Primary School and what conditions are needed.

"If the student does not meet the requirements, our parents are happy to accept him studying at another school."

No list of accepted students, parents not home

Initially, parents asked the school to give them a deadline to respond. It had to be an early deadline, not putting parents in a fait accompli situation because the new school year was only 2 weeks away.

The parents proposed that by 3pm tomorrow at the latest, residents in Tay Mo area (the area where Tay Mo 3 Primary School is located) will have official information in writing. However, the school principal did not make a commitment regarding the response deadline.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang repeatedly emphasized that she only receives information from parents and sends it to the leaders. This is to provide the most accurate information to parents.

The parents again made a request: "If the Board of Directors cannot answer, then ask the school to provide a list of 1,100 students that have been accepted. Because we, the parents, are suspicious that those 1,100 students are not entirely students with registered residence in Tay Mo."

Under great pressure from parents, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang asked for permission from parents to report to the leaders about providing this list and would give an answer after 30 minutes.

"When the list is available, come back," said the parent representative, receiving the agreement of nearly 400 people present at Tay Mo 3 Primary School.

But on the day the school was completed, we went to submit our child's application and received information that the school had accepted enough students from Tay Mo Primary School.

Students there are already studying in the right school district, studying close to home, and not having to travel far. Why are they now allowed to study here but not allowed to return to school for students who are studying far away?", an anonymous parent choked up during a meeting with school leaders.
