In December 2023, the first large-scale exercise of the 12th Corps took place. This was an exercise with coordination and combat coordination between many military branches, including: Air Force, air defense, artillery, tanks, armored vehicles, engineering, chemical, communications, electronic warfare, special forces, etc. The exercise used many new and modern weapons researched, manufactured, and produced by Vietnam that had not appeared in previous exercises.

Receiving the assignment from the editorial board of the agency, journalist Tuan Huy and his colleagues at the People's Army Newspaper arrived a week in advance to learn about the event organization. The whole group tried to learn about the content of the exercise, choose the location, and grasp the exercise plans to prepare for the official exercise day.

Journalist Tuan Huy shared: In reality, for major events, especially those related to military exercises, there are many weapons, equipment, etc. If you want quality journalism, reporters must learn about the exercises, understand the combat plans of the participating forces. You must know the locations of firepower, weapons, and directions of attack... If you know where to fire power and the direction of attack, you will know how to use the appropriate equipment.

In addition, during all military exercises, reporters are not allowed to move around much. At that time, the entire training area is also strictly protected, no one is allowed to go in or out of the training area one hour before the exercise starts.

Sharing about the difficulties when working at such a big event, journalist Tuan Huy said: “The most difficult thing is that reporters have to ensure safety and choose the best shooting position. To ensure safety, we can only place the camera there, align it, calculate the time the tank moves and fires. The whole thing is controlled remotely with high precision, capturing the right moment. How to make each photo carry the spirit of purity, compactness, and strength”.

Each reporter must always be quick, the important thing is to know where the forces are located to calculate so that the photo series has all the forces, showing the strength and flexibility at each time and position when coordinating operations. Unlike the old soldier journalists, today's journalism technology has supported reporters a lot, especially in special situations. Modern working equipment not only gives better and faster photos but also helps reporters stand in positions that are normally impossible to stand. Especially in areas where reporters are not allowed to be there because of possible danger.

Journalist Tuan Huy commented: "Technology is not everything, the important thing is that we need to optimize the devices we have. We need to master technology, know and use the utilities of each device. Train ourselves to be sensitive. Practice a lot because many times the event or action only happens for a few seconds and only happens once. Creating a journalistic work must also have artistic elements in it, not just simply current events. For a rehearsal, the reporter must have knowledge about the issue he is working on."

“For photojournalists, due to constantly changing positions and having to be mobile, health is very important. You don’t just carry a camera, but also other equipment such as multiple lenses and laptops. Photojournalists must train their physical strength and have endurance to get photos that show the viewer their dedication and commitment,” added journalist Tuan Huy.
