“Star” for cooperative products
After nearly 5 years of implementation in the province, the OCOP Program has created a widespread influence, the awareness of cooperative members about the meaning and importance of developing OCOP products has been significantly raised. In order to create a breakthrough, affirming the local mark on each product, the Provincial Cooperative Union has coordinated with functional departments and branches in the province to synchronously deploy solutions such as: Consulting, supporting, implementing registration for production of key products participating in the OCOP Program; promoting propaganda, disseminating policies, consulting, identifying key products, designing models, packaging, labels, procedures for product quality registration, ways to build product brands... Along with the participation of all levels and branches, cooperatives have made efforts and overcome difficulties to have "star" products. The whole province currently has 235 OCOP products with 3-star or higher rating, including 127 products of cooperatives (30 products meet 4-star standard, 97 products meet 3-star standard, accounting for 49.03% of the total number of OCOP products in the province).
Visiting Phu Thinh Tea Production and Processing Cooperative, Phu Ho Commune, Phu Tho Town - the Cooperative has 4 consecutive products meeting 3-star and 4-star OCOP standards in the period of 2021-2023, we noticed that green tea products have changed significantly from packaging to product quality. Currently, the Cooperative is planting and caring for 25 hectares of high-quality tea according to VietGAP standards such as: LDP1, Kim Tuyen, Huong Bac Son... The annual output is about 250 tons of fresh tea buds, equivalent to 50 tons of commercial green tea. Mr. Nguyen Huu Hong - Director of the Cooperative said: The implementation process to meet OCOP product standards requires the Cooperative to standardize from raw material areas, organic fertilizers, biological spraying process and product processing process. To create quality and valuable products, OCOP products are strictly inspected in all steps, from quality, packaging to food safety and hygiene standards, traceability of origin...
Sharing the goal of building OCOP products, Tu Xa Safe Vegetable Processing and Consumption Service Cooperative, Tu Xa Commune, Lam Thao District, strives to improve product quality, complete legal procedures, and at the same time promote linkages to expand acreage, ensure production according to a unified process, strictly control input materials and output products, and be ready to compete with other brands and labels on the market. Mr. Nguyen Van Nghia - Director of the Cooperative informed: Currently, the Cooperative has 5 products that meet 3-star OCOP standards including: Malabar spinach, spinach, asparagus, melon, and celery. The products are consumed in large supermarkets in and outside the province. To continue realizing the goal, the Cooperative strives to standardize many new products, upgrading spinach and asparagus products from 3-star OCOP standards to 4-star OCOP standards with the hope that OCOP products will be closer to consumers.
It can be seen that “starring” is a necessary task, demonstrating the investment and attention in the production and business stages of cooperatives; is the driving force for OCOP entities to change farming practices, research and apply advanced scientific and technical standards in the product creation process. At the same time, promoting the exchange of goods, creating conditions for local people to have jobs, stable income, contributing to restructuring the economy in rural areas.
Chi Dam grapefruit production and trading cooperative, Chi Dam commune, Doan Hung district uses biological disease prevention measures to improve the quality of 4-star OCOP products.
Increase value, sustainable development
With the advantage of natural conditions suitable for growing grapefruit trees, in recent years, many members of 13 cooperatives in Doan Hung district have together planted and expanded the area of grapefruit trees. Up to now, the whole district has about 2,450 hectares, of which the area of Bang Luan grapefruit and Suu grapefruit accounts for about 1,400 hectares, Dien grapefruit is over 800 hectares, the rest are some other grapefruit varieties such as Xuan Van grapefruit, green-skin grapefruit...
In order to maintain and sustain the quality of OCOP products, especially the recognized products of cooperatives, Doan Hung district directed cooperatives to continue growing grapefruit in a safe direction, creating beautiful fruit models and good quality; support and guide care techniques; implement support mechanisms and find stable output, especially on e-commerce trading floors as well as supermarket systems and convenience stores to stabilize output, helping people feel secure in farming.
Implementing the OCOP Program, from 2021 to now, the district has recognized 25 products of 23 production entities, of which over 56% are cooperatives. Among the cooperatives with products meeting OCOP standards, the district has 8 OCOP products from grapefruit trees, of which Bang Luan grapefruit products of Bang Luan specialty grapefruit production and trading service cooperative, Suu Chi Dam grapefruit of Chi Dam grapefruit production and trading cooperative meet the provincial OCOP product standards of 4 stars.
Assessing the economic efficiency after being recognized, Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien - Director of Chi Dam grapefruit production and trading cooperative affirmed: "The economic value of grapefruit products after being evaluated and classified as OCOP has increased by 20% or more compared to before, revenue from grapefruit products has also increased by 10 - 20%. Thanks to that, there are many specialty grapefruit gardens, Dien grapefruit of cooperative members planted for over 15 years, with an average income of 250 - 300 million VND/ha/year".
The dual benefits of the OCOP Program for cooperatives have been confirmed, helping people change their production organization methods, shifting from small-scale production to commodity production, increasing the value and competitiveness of products. In particular, the development of the province's cooperative economy is always associated with the OCOP Program to develop typical crops and livestock. Many cooperatives have high annual revenue and profits, creating stable jobs, improving economic efficiency for cooperatives and members. This is also a favorable environment to connect local typical agricultural products with consumers nationwide.
According to Ms. Vu Thi Minh Tam - Permanent Vice President of the Provincial Cooperative Union, the implementation of the OCOP Program has motivated cooperatives to invest in developing typical products with strengths and cultural characteristics of localities; proactively upgrading quality, design, packaging and orienting the consumption market, adjusting products to suit market demand. Thanks to the active participation of functional sectors and the dynamism of cooperatives, many new OCOP products have been born, contributing to improving the production efficiency of cooperatives in the direction of increasing added value and sustainable development. However, in the process of developing cooperatives associated with the OCOP Program, there are still difficulties and obstacles that need to be resolved.
