In an interview with the New York Post on Air Force One on February 7, Mr. Trump revealed that he had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the conflict in Ukraine. Mr. Trump said: "He (Mr. Putin) wishes there would be no more death."

Although he did not disclose how many times he had spoken with Mr. Putin, President Trump affirmed that he "always had a good relationship with (President) Putin" and that he had a specific plan to end the conflict.

"I hope that the end of the conflict will come quickly. People are dying every day. This war in Ukraine is terrible," the US leader stressed.

During the election campaign, Mr. Trump declared that he would end the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours of becoming President.

In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he “could neither confirm nor deny” the phone call or conversations between Mr Trump and Mr Putin.

"The exchanges between Moscow and Washington take place through different channels," Dmitry Peskov added.

In late January, a Kremlin spokesman said Putin was ready to talk to his counterpart Trump by phone and Moscow was waiting for Washington to respond.

On February 7, President Trump said he would likely meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week to discuss ending the conflict.
