Trump orders investigation into officials who resisted crackdown on illegal immigration

The administration of US President Donald Trump has directed federal prosecutors to investigate officials if they resist efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.

Reuters reported on January 23 that the administration of President Donald Trump has directed prosecutors to investigate officials who resist efforts to enforce regulations against illegal immigrants, in an effort to intensify the crackdown he launched on his first day in office.

American churches and schools are no longer safe havens for illegal immigrants under President Trump

According to a memo dated January 23, cited by Reuters, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove directed the department's staff that state and local officials must cooperate with efforts to combat illegal immigration, and that federal prosecutors "should investigate incidents involving any misconduct for consideration."

The Justice Department could also challenge laws that complicate federal efforts, Bove said.

The policy comes as the new Republican administration prepares to ramp up enforcement of illegal immigration in cities with large immigrant populations, risking confrontation with officials in cities like New York and Chicago that have been less cooperative with the effort.

The new memo represents a Justice Department effort to support his agenda, moving beyond prosecuting illegal immigrants or those who hire them as city and state officials. It is the latest in a series of executive actions President Trump has taken to curb illegal immigration, a top priority of his administration.

During Trump's first term (2017-2021), many Democratic officials refused to cooperate with his enforcement efforts, and some have vowed to oppose them again.

"We know that we don't have to engage in immigration enforcement activities," California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, told CNN.

But the resistance within the Democratic Party this time is not uniform. In the US House of Representatives on January 22, 46 Democrats joined 217 Republicans to pass a law that would force illegal immigrants to be detained for deportation if they are convicted of theft.

The bill has passed the Senate with Democratic support and is now on its way to Mr Trump's desk to be signed into law.
