Trump drops out of Desantis race at last minute

Mr Trump's outdoor rally had been scheduled to coincide with a visit to Iowa by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who are considered the leading contenders for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2024 US presidential election.

Earlier on May 13, Governor DeSantis attended Congressman Randy Feenstra’s annual Feenstra family picnic in Sioux Center, Iowa, where he appeared to criticize former President Trump’s recent election losses.

"There is no substitute for winning. We must abandon the culture of losing that has infected our party in recent years," DeSantis said.

Former President Trump has been largely blamed for the Republican Party's subpar performance in the 2022 midterm elections, with some in the party complaining about the quality of some of the hard-line candidates he supported.

Governor DeSantis also spoke at an Iowa Republican Party fundraiser in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, late on May 13 (US time).

Although he is closest to former President Trump in the polls, Governor DeSantis is still nearly 30 points behind, according to The Hill , citing a poll compiled by the website FiveThirtyEight .
