Biden makes difficult decision for Trump before his term ends

US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order permanently banning the development of oil and gas projects in vast areas of the ocean, making it difficult for his successor Donald Trump to reverse the decision.

According to CNN, President Biden's January 6 executive order bans new oil and gas leasing projects in 625 million acres (more than 2.5 million km2 ) of US-managed waters in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The ban will prevent oil and gas companies from leasing US waters for new drilling and oil and gas exploitation.

“My decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling on these shores can cause irreversible damage to our beloved places and is not necessary to meet our country’s energy needs. It is not worth the risk,” Biden said.

The order was issued under the Extended Continental Shelf Act of 1953, which allows the president to block new oil and gas leasing and development in federal waters. The law does not explicitly give the president authority to reverse the decision, meaning President-elect Donald Trump would need congressional support to undo his predecessor’s actions.

"It's ridiculous. I'm going to lift that ban immediately," Mr. Trump said in an interview on January 6.

Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the ban was "a disgraceful decision designed to exact political revenge on the American people who gave President Trump the mandate to increase oil drilling and lower gas prices."

Ron Neal, chairman of the offshore projects committee of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), criticized President Biden's decision as having a "huge and disastrous impact." "It's a major attack on the oil and natural gas industry," Neal said.

Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute (API), criticized President Biden for using his final days in office to restrict domestic energy development, contrary to the support of American voters in the election. "We urge policymakers to use every tool at their disposal to reverse this politically motivated decision and restore a pro-American energy approach to federal leasing," Sommers said.

Energy analysts say the ban will not have a major impact on U.S. oil exploration, production and production. Energy analyst Tom Kloza at the Oil Price Information Service notes that there are many offshore rigs operating in the Gulf of Mexico and that new projects typically take six to eight years to come online.

Despite environmental commitments, US oil production under the Biden administration has set a new record and the US produces more than any other country in history, according to CNN.
