AP news agency quoted an Israeli government official as saying that on February 11, after a security cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to increase troop numbers in and around the Gaza Strip, with military generals preparing for all situations, after Hamas threatened to cancel the scheduled hostage handover.
In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister warned that if the Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip were not released as planned, the ceasefire with Hamas would be canceled and the country would continue to step up military operations in Gaza until the Islamic movement was "completely defeated".
Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that his country should cut off electricity, water and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and recapture all Palestinian prisoners that Israel released in hostage exchanges as soon as the conflict resumes.
Minister Smotrich issued an ultimatum to Hamas: "This must convey a very simple message: For every hostage killed, we will establish sovereignty over 5% of Gaza on the same day. For every additional hostage, we will have 5% annexation and we will have the full support of US President Donald Trump in this matter."
To date, Hamas has returned a total of 21 hostages to Israel, including five Thai hostages. However, on February 10, the movement announced that it would suspend the hostage exchange, scheduled for February 15, and accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement. Israel denied the accusation.
