Accordingly, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in conjunction with the Department of Economy and Infrastructure of Cai Nuoc district (Ca Mau province) organized a workshop to summarize and replicate the leather crab farming model.
The project "Application of circulating filtration technology to raise sea crabs - 2-shell crabs in plastic boxes" implemented at Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen's household has a total investment of more than 420 million VND. Of which, the State supports 180 million VND, from the science and technology career fund in 2023, the rest is contributed by the family. Implementation period is from November 2023 to July 2024.
With a scale of 200 plastic boxes and a circulating filtration system in a concrete tank, after 9 months of harvesting 8 crops, the average yield per crop is more than 50 kg of commercial sea crabs - 2-shell crabs, profit from 5-7 million VND, some crops have profits up to nearly 10 million VND.
To help farmers better understand the process of raising 2-shell crabs, at the project summary meeting, the relevant authorities also organized field trips for farmers to exchange and learn from experiences.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen shared: “First, we must keep the water environment stable. Then, we choose healthy crabs, preferably square bib crabs harvested locally, or commercial crabs from households, to raise to 2 shells; because locally raised crabs adapt to the environment and salinity, reducing risks caused by environmental factors.
In particular, to help the crabs grow to 2 shells quickly and shorten the harvest time, the food source for the crabs must be changed regularly. For example, if you feed the crabs with catfish today, the next day you feed them with golden apple snails or 2-shelled crabs, which will help the crabs grow faster.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen, an aquaculture farmer in Tan Tao hamlet, Tan Hung Dong commune, Cai Nuoc district (Ca Mau province) shares the process of raising sea crabs - 2-shell crabs.
After visiting the model of raising 2-shell crabs in plastic boxes, Mr. Truong Kieu Mien, Cai Ran hamlet, Phu Hung commune, Cai Nuoc district (Ca Mau province) said that the unique point of the model is that it does not require a large area, so it is suitable for most farmers' actual conditions and easy to apply.
On the other hand, when the water source is passed through a circulating filtration system to remove pathogens, it will limit the risk of damage to farmed crabs compared to the natural environment, contributing to increasing the value of commercial sea crab products for farmers.
According to Mr. Pham Son, My Hoa hamlet, Tran Thoi commune, most of the shrimp farming area is being intercropped with crabs by farmers, mainly selling square bib crabs and y crabs, at low prices. “After visiting the model, I will apply it to my household.
Because the time to raise 2-shell crabs is not long, only about 1 month before they can be sold; in addition, square bib crabs currently cost about 150,000 VND/kg, but 2-shell crabs are bought by traders for more than 300,000 VND/kg and the quantity is unlimited," said Mr. Son.
Previously, the project "Application of circulating filtration technique to raise 2-shell crabs in plastic boxes" at Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen's household was visited by the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Research and Development of High-tech Agriculture, highly appreciated and said that it will continue to research, disseminate and replicate in the locality.
It can be seen that the project "Application of circulating filtration technique to raise 2-shell sea crabs in plastic boxes" helps farmers have more choices of suitable sea crab farming methods, in order to diversify the types of commercial crabs, meet the needs of domestic and export markets, contribute to increasing value and improving income for farmers.
