With the important field of technology, how do training industry trends and requirements for human resources respond to changes in the labor market?
What training majors are included in the engineering field? How does the 4.0 industrial revolution and the strong development of AI affect career trends and human resources in the engineering sector? In addition to professional knowledge, career opportunities after graduation for students in this field are also information of interest when choosing a major...
Artificial intelligence (AI) is also having a strong impact on changes in engineering education.
Who painted the picture?
The information will be available in part 2 of the online TV consulting program "Choosing a future major: New in engineering" this afternoon, March 4, with information about career trends, job opportunities, training process, and admission requirements in this field.
Experts attending the program include:
The second batch of consultants in the program
- Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc, Head of Construction Department, Ho Chi Minh City Open University;
- Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi, Academic Coordinator of Mechanical Engineering, Vietnam-Germany University;
- Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc, Director of Gloucestershire VietNam.
The importance of engineering and technology
Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc, Director of Gloucestershire VietNam, emphasized the importance of the engineering technology industry. According to forecasts, from now until 2030, the engineering technology industry will train about 2.7 million university students. It is forecasted that this industry will also account for 35% of the total human resource demand from now until 2030, the demand for engineering technology human resources will lead and be higher than that of the economic management industry. With Gloucestershire VietNam's British standard training program, learners have the opportunity to experience very early to equip themselves with English skills and other factors to be able to work in an international environment, meeting the global labor market.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc, Head of the Department of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, informed that in the list of training codes of the Ministry of Education and Training, there are a series of majors related to engineering technology. These include mechanical engineering, architectural construction, electricity-electronics and automation, information technology, etc. For example, Ho Chi Minh City Open University has groups of majors such as IT, biotechnology, construction and architecture.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi, Academic Coordinator of Mechanical Engineering at Vietnam-Germany University, said that in recent years, science and technology have developed, so universities have opened many new majors. In 2024, Vietnam-Germany University will open two new majors such as process and environmental engineering and intelligent traffic engineering. In 2025, the university will have 11 undergraduate majors, of which 8 are engineering majors: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer engineering.

How are engineering majors recruited at schools?
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc said that in recent years, the technology engineering sector in admissions has not been as "hot" as the management economics sector. However, the level of competition will vary depending on the sector. Information technology and computer science sectors have a high level of competition, and candidates with good academic performance have a chance to be admitted. The construction sector has a more moderate admission score, with an average academic performance of 7 points/subject having a high chance of being admitted.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi informed that this year, Vietnam-Germany University has 5 admission methods and candidates can register for all 5 methods. In fact, in previous years, the admission scores for all majors of the school were relatively even. In particular, for the major of computer science, the number of applications submitted is often higher and the competition for scholarships is more fierce.
Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc said that this year, Gloucestershire Vietnam will consider admission based on the following methods: high school graduation exam scores, academic transcript scores, Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam, and V-SAT exam results. Candidates can register online or directly at the Gloucestershire Vietnam office.

Participating in the program, students sent many questions to the consultants.
A student asked: "What are the differences between construction engineering and construction management in terms of curriculum, job opportunities, income and level of competition in admission?". Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc answered: "Job opportunities in the construction industry are very high when our country is in the development stage. Currently, Vietnam has about 70 training institutions related to the construction industry group with the construction engineering and management group. If studying construction engineering, engineers will do a stage in the technical stages of a construction project. Meanwhile, construction management will train professional construction managers.
"I want to study construction engineering technology at the high-quality program of Ho Chi Minh City Open University. Let me ask you what is the difference between the standard training program and the special program. If I only get an average score of 7.0 in math, am I suitable to study this major?". With this question, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc answered: The list of subjects between the two programs is the same, but the output standards of the special program are higher than the output standards of the standard program, for example, the output standards of foreign languages. In addition, the special program has a number of subjects taught in English, the curriculum and lecturers are also more international...
A student asked: ''How is studying mechanical engineering at Vietnam-Germany University different from other universities?'' Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi explained: ''Mechanical engineering is a very broad field, and graduates receive a double degree from Vietnam-Germany University and a partner university in Germany. Students enjoy the policies for students of both universities.
Regarding the TestAd exam, Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi said that candidates with good math knowledge, logical thinking and deductive thinking will do well on the TestAd exam for candidates applying for technical majors. The exam is in English, so candidates with good English skills will do better on this exam. Candidates do not need to practice, and the school does not organize practice sessions for candidates before the exam.
A reader sent a question to the program: ''Gloucestershire VietNam offers international training programs, English certainly plays an important role. What level of foreign language proficiency do students need to study, and if they do not meet the requirements, is there any support from the school?'' Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc informed that Gloucestershire VietNam also offers training in English. According to the UK training program standards, students need IELTS 6.0. However, students studying this program in Vietnam have 2 years to complete this standard. During the course, students are given the opportunity to study and practice English to achieve the required standard level.
Many students are interested in scholarship opportunities when studying in a joint program. What scholarship policies does Gloucestershire Vietnam have in 2025 and admission requirements? Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc informed that Gloucestershire Vietnam has scholarships from 25-100% of tuition fees. Candidates are considered for scholarships based on their academic records, high school graduation exam scores, and competency assessment test scores or IELTS certificates...

To study engineering well
One of the concerns of students is what qualities do engineering and industrial fields require from students? In addition to specialized knowledge, what professional skills do engineering students need to equip themselves with to best adapt to the labor market?
Answering this concern, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Phuoc said that to study well in the technical field, students need to have knowledge of mathematics and logical thinking. In addition, foreign languages are also the next priority. In terms of skills, good communication and a good attitude at work are necessary. When having enough knowledge and skills, students in this field can absolutely receive a salary of 50 million VND/month.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi also affirmed that mathematics and physics are the foundational knowledge for science and technology. But among the many necessary skills, Dr. Vi emphasized: "Learners must be able to work well independently and work well in groups, in their studies and future work."
Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc also believes that there are many skills needed to work and succeed in the technical field, in which adaptability and continuous learning skills are very important.
