Raising specialty fish, dense crispy carp on Duong River, splashing water loudly, Bac Ninh people get rich

Realizing that raising fish in cages on rivers has many advantages compared to raising fish in ponds, taking advantage of natural conditions, raising fish with few diseases, and giving high productivity, Mr. Do Dang Nang, Thuy Mao village, Mao Dien commune, Thuan Thanh town (Bac Ninh province) boldly invested in building a model of raising fish in cages on rivers, earning hundreds of millions of dong each year.

After graduating from university with a degree in aquaculture engineering, Mr. Do Dang Nang from Thuy Mao village, Mao Dien commune, instead of choosing to work outside, returned to his hometown to carry out his family's main profession of raising fish and breeding fish to supply to local ponds.

In 2012, implementing a pilot model of raising fish in cages on the river by the Department of Fisheries of Bac Ninh province, Mr. Nang registered and invested in building 10 cages to raise fish.

Mr. Nang shared that at first, due to lack of experience, it was very difficult. He had to work and learn more techniques to effectively raise fish. In the first 3 years, almost all the money he earned was spent on investment. Every year, Mr. Nang invested in expanding the number of cages.

Currently, Mr. Nang has invested in building 60 fish cages on the Duong River in Thuy Mao village, Mao Dien commune, Thuan Thanh town.

Mr. Nang (far left) shares his experience in raising fish in cages (including specialty fish - crispy carp) on the Duong River, flowing through Mao Dien Commune, Thuan Thanh Town, Bac Ninh Province.

The fish breeds raised by Mr. Nang in cages are high-quality fish breeds with high economic value such as grass carp, crispy carp, red tilapia, catfish, etc. The main fish currently is crispy carp, accounting for over 40% of the output.

Mr. Nang said that to invest in 60 fish cages on the river, he has spent about 3 billion VND so far. The cages are designed to be 9m long, 6m wide and 3m deep. The area around the cages is a floating road system for feeding and harvesting fish.

The location of the cage is closely related to the development of the farmed fish and the care process. When placing the cage, Mr. Nang noted: the fish cage must be placed in a well-ventilated area, with a constant water flow, a flow rate of 0.2 - 0.3 m/s, and clean water that is not polluted by industrial, agricultural, or domestic waste.

Depth of 3 m or more, the bottom of the cage is at least 0.5 m from the river bottom, the cage must be cleaned and maintained regularly during the farming process. Do not place the cage in places with stagnant water or fast-flowing water, or river sections that are prone to landslides.

The location of the cage must be convenient for traffic to facilitate the provision of breeds, food, care, management, harvesting and transportation of products.

When encountering bad weather such as rain, storms, etc., farmers need to carefully check the cage, use anchor ropes to ensure they do not break when there is a strong current, anchor the cage in safe places, and can harvest some large fish to reduce the weight in the cage and reduce damage.

Cage farming areas are located in areas planned for each local aquatic species and approved by competent authorities.

Cage fish farming from the time of releasing the fry to harvest for some types of fish takes about 2 years. With 60 cages of his family, Mr. Nang applies alternating crop farming to have fish harvested regularly and reduce input costs in fish farming.

Mr. Nang said that with grass carp, after one year of raising, 1kg of seed can be harvested; with red tilapia, after one year of raising, it can be harvested; with black carp, catfish, and common carp, it takes two years to harvest.

Realizing that crispy carp has now become the top choice of diners at restaurants with its unique sweet, crispy flavor. This is a fish with high economic value and potential consumption demand, so in recent years, Mr. Nang has focused on developing crispy carp farming.

This specialty fish is suitable for cage farming on rivers. The fish can grow quickly and healthily, giving high productivity and good quality. The current price of crispy carp can be sold at 115,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nang's crispy carp raised in cages on the Duong River flowing through Thuan Thanh, Bac Ninh province, is ready for sale and weighs over 3 kg/fish.

As an aquaculture engineer, and having many years of experience raising fish in cages on rivers, Mr. Nang shared his experiences to limit diseases in fish. Regarding the food used to raise fish, it is necessary to ensure the following requirements: arrange appropriate portions for each stage of development, feed just enough, not too much or too little, the purpose is to save on food costs, minimize environmental pollution, and ensure the development of fish.

In addition, farmers must closely monitor changes in weather and the health of the fish, determine that disease prevention is the main step, the farming process must be checked regularly, when fish get sick, it may be necessary to stop or reduce the amount of food to treat until the disease is gone, isolate sick fish in cages at the end of the flow to avoid spreading.

Fish often suffer from some diseases such as: parasites, fungi, bacterial hemorrhage, digestive problems... When feeding fish, farmers need to periodically add vitamins, digestive enzymes, liver detoxification... to help increase the resistance of farmed fish.

Raising fish in cages on the river brings high income, but the cost is very high. Mr. Nang said that the cost of fish feed can be up to 700 - 800 million VND/month, the investment capital is large, but in return, raising fish in cages also brings a relatively high income that raising other animals cannot match.

In 2023, with 60 fish cages, Mr. Nang harvested over 200 tons of commercial fish, including more than 80 tons of crispy carp. When harvesting fish, traders came to buy them. With the cage fish farming model, after deducting expenses, after one year, Mr. Nang's family earned "from 600 to 700 million VND/year" - Mr. Nang said.

Mr. Nang said that he prepared the fish fry from the farms' ponds to raise in cages on the river. In addition to providing enough fish fry for cage farming on the river, in 2023, Mr. Nang also sold nearly 30 tons of fish fry to farmers in and outside the area.

It is known that Mr. Nang's family is currently renting land to build aquaculture farms in the following locations: Hoai Thuong commune, Thuan Thanh town, Dai Bai commune, Xuan Lai commune, Gia Binh district, the total area of the 3 farms is 15 hectares, in addition to the 3 family workers, Mr. Nang has to hire 5 more regular workers and 5-7 seasonal workers, the income from the fish farms also brings his family hundreds of millions of dong each year.

Mr. Duong Van Cuong - Deputy Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Thuan Thanh town said that currently in Thuan Thanh town, there are 274 fish cages on the river in the communes of Mao Dien, Hoai Thuong, Dai Dong Thanh, Dinh To, mainly concentrated in Mao Dien commune.

The cage fish farming model on the river of Mr. Do Dang Nang's household in Thuy Mao village, Mao Dien commune, Thuan Thanh town has been invested quite systematically. The model has taken advantage of natural conditions, raised fish with few diseases, high productivity, cage fish products are consumed by the market at high prices, compared to the form of raising fish in ponds, it has many more advantages.

In the coming time, to make cage fish farming bring high economic efficiency, the Town's Agricultural Service Center will strengthen coordination with functional agencies: Provincial Center for Agricultural Extension and High-Tech Agricultural Development; Bac Ninh Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine and Aquaculture to organize training courses for households on the process of raising fish in cages on rivers according to VietGAP.

At the same time, continue to build aquaculture extension models with high-quality aquatic breeds, diverse in species, focusing on raising aquatic species with high economic value, specialties suitable for aquaculture in general and cage fish farming on the Duong River in particular, aiming to effectively implement food safety management in aquaculture.
