US President Joe Biden has pledged a peaceful and orderly transfer of power, while President-elect Donald Trump has begun appointing staff for his incoming administration.

Biden's message

In a speech at the White House on the morning of November 7 (US time), President Biden called on the American people to "cool down" after the Republican Party representative's victory and sought to comfort Democrats who were worried about the return of former President Trump, according to Reuters. "Failures are inevitable but giving up is unforgivable. Failure does not mean we are defeated," Mr. Biden said. The current White House owner emphasized that the November 5 election had proven the integrity of the US electoral system and committed to an orderly transfer of power. Mr. Biden also invited Mr. Trump to meet at the White House and Mr. Trump's campaign said the president-elect would come.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told troops that the Pentagon would conduct an orderly transfer of power to the incoming administration of President-elect Trump. "As always, the US military will be ready to implement the policy choices of the next commander in chief and comply with all lawful orders from its civilian chain of command," Secretary Austin emphasized in a message to troops on November 6. He also affirmed that the US military will be separate from politics and continue to protect the country, the Constitution and the rights of all American citizens.

First staff

Also on November 7, President-elect Trump announced that Susie Wiles (67 years old), one of his two campaign managers, will be White House Chief of Staff. "Susie will continue to work tirelessly to make America great again. It is a great honor to have Susie as the first female chief of staff in American history," Mr. Trump emphasized.

This is the first personnel announcement made as Mr. Trump prepares to return to the White House on January 20, 2025. AFP and Reuters yesterday also listed a number of leading candidates for other important positions in the incoming administration of President-elect Trump. Accordingly, those being considered for the position of attorney general include Senators Mike Lee, Eric Schmitt and John Ratcliffe, and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. With Mr. Trump's vow to deport illegal immigrants en masse and his ongoing legal problems, the person nominated to be attorney general will hold one of the most sensitive and challenging jobs.

For the position of Secretary of State, potential candidates include former Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell, Senator Marco Rubio, former National Security Adviser Robert C. O'Brien and Senator Bill Hagerty. The next US Secretary of State will play a key role in implementing Mr. Trump's "America First" foreign policy and will likely see major changes in US alliances, according to AFP.

As for the defense secretary and CIA director, America’s foreign allies will be closely watching the nominees for these two important positions. Potential candidates for defense secretary include Representative Michael Waltz and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In addition, former US Defense Department Chief of Staff Kash Patel and Senator John Ratcliffe are considered future CIA director candidates.

Russian and Chinese leaders congratulate Mr. Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 7 congratulated Mr. Trump on his victory in the 2024 US presidential election and said he was ready to hold talks with Mr. Trump, according to AFP. On the same day, Mr. Trump said he had not spoken to Mr. Putin, but signaled that he would negotiate with the Russian leader. Chinese President Xi Jinping also sent a congratulatory message to Mr. Trump on November 7, emphasizing that the two countries must "find the right way... to get along in this new era, benefiting both sides and the world," according to CCTV.
