Pumpkin seeds in boy's airway successfully removed
Previously, on the evening of February 2, the family took baby TNN (1 year old, in Lam Dong province) to the Quang Ngai Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital with symptoms of coughing, choking, and difficulty breathing. The family said that the baby had these symptoms because he ate pumpkin seeds.
Through examination, tests, chest X-ray and CT scan, doctors diagnosed the child with severe pneumonia and monitored for foreign objects in the airway.
Immediately afterwards, the patient underwent a flexible bronchoscopy to remove the foreign object. Here, doctors removed the pumpkin seed located in the patient's left lower lobe bronchus.
Through endoscopy, doctors discovered pumpkin seeds in the boy's airway.
Doctors from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Quang Ngai Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, recommend that family members should be extremely careful when letting children come into contact with objects or eat nuts that can easily cause choking. When detecting signs of coughing and choking in children, or suspecting that they are choking on a foreign object, they should immediately take the child to the hospital for timely treatment by a doctor.
