Studying the famous "heavy" medical major of Hanoi Medical University, Minh Phuong did not think she could participate in a beauty contest and win the title of Miss Runner-up.

More than a month after the final round of the Miss Vietnam Student contest, Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong, 21 years old, from Hai Phong, a third-year medical student at Hanoi Medical University, still remembers the journey to win the title of First Runner-up.

"That was a surprising result, an event that marked my youth, something I didn't think I would have when I was a medical student in Hanoi," Phuong said.

A representative of Hanoi Medical University said Phuong is the first student of the school to participate in a beauty contest such as Miss Vietnam Student. Phuong is an excellent student, with an average score of 8.2/10, and has received the school's scholarship for two terms. Normally, about 10% of medical students achieve this result.

In addition, Phuong participates in course research and is a member of the school's Student Union executive committee.

With a mother who is a doctor, from a young age, after following her mother to the hospital and seeing doctors treating patients, Phuong nurtured the dream of becoming a doctor. Because of this orientation, when taking the entrance exam to high school, she chose the specialized Chemistry class at Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, Hai Phong.

Admitted to the Medical Faculty of Hanoi Medical University in 2021 with a total admission score of 31 (28 points in the B00 combination exam and bonus points thanks to the third prize in the national Chemistry exam), Phuong prepared herself mentally for a hard study because she heard many stories about medical school.

Studying at university is mainly self-study. This learning method is similar to what Phuong experienced when she was a specialized student. Therefore, the female student did not encounter many difficulties. She confidently registered to participate in club activities. However, the initial confusion of having to live away from home in the context of Covid-19, the overwhelming study and extracurricular activities made the female student overloaded for a while.

"There were times when I thought I couldn't overcome it, but then I gradually got used to it and adapted well," Phuong said.

At the beginning of her third year, when the Miss Vietnam Student contest sent information to the school, Phuong, who is 1m74 tall, was encouraged by her friends and seniors at school to compete. Phuong did not think that studying medicine would have time for beauty contests. But when the opportunity came, she decided to experience it.

To prepare for the competition, Phuong had to learn many skills, from catwalking in 15cm high heels, to learning makeup, finding costumes, and preparing for sub-competitions such as talent, English speaking, and community projects.

As the only Medicine and Pharmacy student to reach the final round of the competition, Phuong easily connected with other contestants thanks to her story of studying at school. "Many students were curious about whether I got to study on real human bodies, and what it was like to go to the hospital for clinical practice and to examine and treat patients," Phuong shared.

Phuong recounted the first time she studied Anatomy on a cadaver. Anatomy is also the most difficult subject because it is a morphology subject. You can understand the knowledge but cannot remember it all because it is too detailed. Even if you remember and understand it all, if you don't use it for a month, it's like having to learn it all over again.

The subject that impressed me the most was Chemistry-Biology because this was the first subject when I entered school, the amount of knowledge was huge and very difficult, but the more I studied, the more I liked it because I learned more about the processes related to the human body.

Phuong also told about her clinical experience at the hospital, from not knowing how to ask patients in the second year to the changes after a year, when she got used to the hospital environment and knew how to communicate with patients more effectively.

Returning to school after the competition, Phuong said that studying was still as interesting as ever. In addition to going to school and attending clinical classes at the hospital, Phuong conducts scientific research in the laboratory of the Department of Physiology.

She maintains a learning method that digs deep into what interests her. In each subject, Phuong looks for something interesting, then studies it thoroughly and expands her knowledge. Before each lesson, the female student pays attention to the main objectives of the lesson to grasp it more easily.

As a medical student in the French intensive program (AUF), Phuong takes extra French classes to get the required certificate soon. The female student also improves her English by learning about foreign cultures, listening to music, watching movies, and reading books and newspapers. Phuong believes that having a foreign language is very important, helping her access the latest medical research in the world.

Previously, at the Miss Vietnamese Student contest, Phuong was the only contestant who chose to answer behavioral questions in both Vietnamese and English.

The question Phuong received was "Follow your passion, success will follow you, what is your opinion on the above opinion?". Phuong answered "Living with passion every day is already a success. When living with passion, we will not be afraid of new difficulties and challenges, so it is understandable if success follows us. For me, what I am passionate about is becoming a valuable person for society, whether as a doctor taking care of people's health or an inspiring young woman coming out of a competition".

Phuong said at that time she didn't think any candidates would answer bilingually, but only encouraged herself to try her best so as not to have any regrets.

"After reviewing, I realized that I made some grammar mistakes, but it's okay. The important thing is that I dared to do it," Phuong said, adding that when learning a foreign language, not being afraid of making mistakes is important.

Becoming the runner-up of Miss Vietnamese Student, Phuong said that she will participate in many activities in the coming time. However, her biggest goal is to maintain her excellent academic results, do more scientific research and pass the residency exam.
