Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on February 17 rejected President Donald Trump's proposal to take control of Gaza and force Palestinians to leave, while Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said he expected Arab countries to come up with a viable alternative.

The two influential lawmakers were among a bipartisan group of US senators who also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv.
Earlier, on February 16, Mr. Netanyahu once again expressed his support for the US leader's controversial proposal for Gaza.
Israeli officials have also responded to President Donald Trump's proposal. In particular, Defense Minister Israel Katz has instructed the military to prepare a plan to allow Palestinians in Gaza to leave voluntarily.
However, Senator Lindsey Graham - a longtime ally of Mr Trump and a key Republican figure in Congress with great influence on foreign policy and national security - declared that the US Senate has no intention of controlling Gaza "in any form".
Senator Richard Blumenthal bluntly called the plan “unworkable.”
In addition, President Trump's proposal has also faced strong criticism from Arab officials, many of whom believe that this plan is no different from "ethnic cleansing". On February 17, Mr. Netanyahu continued to affirm that Palestinians in Gaza should choose to leave.
“The only thing President Trump has done is start a discussion that has been overdue for too long,” Senator Graham said, adding that Arab countries have “awakened” to find a better solution for Gaza.
Officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan and Egypt are expected to meet this February to discuss the future of Gaza and develop a counter-plan to the US leader's proposal.
Also according to Senator Blumenthal, King Abdullah of Jordan convinced him that Arab countries would come up with a specific plan that included normalization of relations with Tel Aviv, self-determination for Palestinians, regional defense agreements and security guarantees for Israel.
“If these elements are included in a realistic plan, this could be a turning point for the region,” Mr. Blumenthal stressed.
