Who could replace Mr. Biden?

Despite Mr Biden’s endorsement, however, Ms Harris’s formal nomination as the Democratic presidential nominee remains uncertain. Delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August will still have to choose their own nominee.

And here are other candidates who could replace Mr. Biden to compete with Republican candidate Donald Trump in this year's US presidential election:

California Governor Gavin Newsom

California Governor Gavin Newsom, 56, is one of the names that keeps coming up.

Before Mr. Biden withdrew, Mr. Newsom had been steadfast in his support for the US President and dismissed talk of the Democratic Party replacing Mr. Biden with another candidate. However, Mr. Newsom has also made no secret of his White House ambitions.

In recent months, Newsom has increased his international travel, run numerous ads touting his record and invested millions of dollars in a political action committee, fueling speculation that he will run for reelection in 2028.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, 52, has emerged as one of the leading figures in the Democratic Party in recent years.

She has been the governor of Michigan since 2019 - a state considered a key battleground for the White House this year.

Her state has a large working class and large African-American and Arab communities, all important constituencies that Mr Biden has struggled to win over.

Ms Whitmer is a fierce critic of Mr Trump and there is widespread speculation that she will run for president in 2028.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro took office only last year but is already seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party nationwide.

Trained as a lawyer, Mr. Shapiro served as the state’s attorney general, a legal background similar to Ms. Harris’s as a prosecutor.

He has a long track record of winning elections against Republicans in a state that Democrats believe they must win to secure victory in November.

Mr. Shapiro has endorsed Ms. Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination.

US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg built a strong following among Democratic voters in the 2020 primary race against both Biden and Harris, winning the first-in-the-nation caucus in Iowa.

Seen as a defender of President Biden's policies, Mr. Buttigieg later endorsed Mr. Biden and was selected to join the new administration's Cabinet in 2021.

Mr. Buttigieg has also endorsed Ms. Harris.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, 46, is one of the youngest people to be mentioned as a potential candidate.

He built a successful political career in a heavily Republican state that voted for Republican candidate Donald Trump by more than 25% in 2020.

Mr. Beshear is credited with bringing jobs to Kentucky, supporting public education and expanding access to health care.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker

Billionaire Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, 59, has proven himself a major force in the Democratic Party by tapping his financial resources to support Biden’s campaign and host the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.
