Towards the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day on the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month, let's review with Vietnam.vn famous legends from the Hung Kings' time, thereby remembering and expressing gratitude for the country's founding merits of the first kings of the Vietnamese people.
During the Hung King era, many legends were passed down among the people, clearly demonstrating the spirit of solidarity of the Vietnamese ethnic community.
Legend of the Hundred Eggs
Legend has it that the founder of the Vietnamese people was Kinh Duong Vuong, whose tomb is still located in An Lu village, Thuan Thanh, Bac Ninh. Kinh Duong Vuong became king around the year Nham Tuat (more than 2000 years BC).
Kinh Duong Vuong married the daughter of Than Long, the king of Dong Dinh Lake, and gave birth to a son named Sung Lam. He later succeeded his father to the throne under the reign name Lac Long Quan. Lac Long Quan married the daughter of De Lai in Lang Xuong cave, Au Co, and gave birth to a sac of one hundred eggs, which hatched into one hundred sons, the ancestors of the Bach Viet people. Lac Long Quan appointed his eldest son as Hung Vuong to succeed the throne, then led 49 of his sons to the sea while Au Co took 50 to the mountains.
Hung Vuong ascended the throne, named the country Van Lang, and established the capital in Phong Chau (Bach Hac, Phu Tho). The following kings were all called Hung Vuong and there were 18 kings in total.
Legend of Phu Dong Thien Vuong Thanh Giong
The legend tells of the mythical hero Thanh Giong riding an iron horse, wearing an iron helmet, using an iron sword to defeat the An invaders and "flying" up to the sky from the top of Soc Son mountain during the reign of the 6th Hung King.
Legend of Chung cake and Day cake
The 6th Hung King wanted to choose a virtuous son to succeed him to the throne, so he ordered a food competition. Lang Lieu used sticky rice to make Chung cake and Day cake. The King saw that Lang Lieu was filial and had created two precious cakes, so he passed the throne to him.
Legend of Son Tinh - Thuy Tinh
To find a husband for his daughter Mi Nuong, the 18th Hung King challenged Son Tinh (God of the Mountain) and Thuy Tinh (God of the Water) to marry. Whoever brought the nine-tusked elephant, nine-spurred chicken, and nine-red-haired horse first would win. Son Tinh was the one who brought the gifts first, so he married Mi Nuong. Thuy Tinh returned with a grudge and brought floodwaters to attack Son Tinh. Son Tinh and the people fought bravely and pushed Thuy Tinh back.
Legend of Chu Dong Tu
During a trip, Princess Tien Dung - daughter of the 18th Hung King - met a poor man named Chu Dong Tu and they got married. The couple worked hard to make a living, sought out a teacher to study and were given precious treasures.
Unexpectedly, this treasure made King Hung think that they were rebels, so he sent troops to arrest them. Unexpectedly, the entire land where Chu Dong Tu and Tien Dung lived suddenly flew up into the sky, leaving behind a deep pond named Nhat Da Trach.
Legend of the Oath Stone
According to legend, when Thuc Phan An Duong Vuong was given the throne by the 18th Hung King, he swore to forever protect the country that King Hung had given him and to forever burn incense to worship King Hung.
Legend of Mai An Tiem
Because of the saying “Gifts are worries, gifts are debts”, Mai An Tiem - King Hung's adopted son was sent to a deserted island. Having picked up seeds, Mai An Tiem boldly planted and cared for the strange plant and it produced a watermelon with a sweet and cool taste, quenching thirst and making the body healthy. Thanks to that, Mai An Tiem was trusted by the king and allowed to return to the palace.
