“This year’s theme is ‘ Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone, explaining why and how they should take good care of you’ . Through the letter, you can speak up for youth, express your compassion and responsibility to society. Through these sincere letters, you will contribute to creating change, making this world more connected and better,” said the Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Education and Training.

Poet Tran Dang Khoa commented: “The themes of the UPU letter writing contest often deal with big issues. The theme of this year’s contest is very good and meaningful. This is my favorite theme in the past 10 years.”

According to the poet, this is an open topic, stimulating creative thinking and emotions in each student. The contest judges are experienced writers and journalists who will discover and support unique and creative ideas. He also noted that students need to choose who they will send this letter to when they transform into the ocean.

Poet Tran Dang Khoa added that this is an international competition, which is of great interest to leaders at all levels. He has repeatedly requested the Ministry of Education and Training to directly admit the winners to university as a way to encourage them.

From a shy child to a more confident child thanks to the UPU international letter writing competition

As the winner of the national first prize in the 2024 UPU international letter-writing competition, Nguyen Do Quang Minh said that the competition has helped him become more confident. Through each UPU competition, Minh always wants to solve the problems raised in the competition.

“This year, when I heard the theme, I was very excited. If I were to transform into the ocean, I would have many things to say to humanity and advise the younger generation to preserve the blue color of the ocean,” Minh shared.

Huynh Thi Thu Ngan (class 9/2, Nguyen Khuyen Secondary and High School) shared that she knows that every year, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) always chooses prominent, global issues as the theme of the contest.

“Coming to the contest, we satisfy our passion for creativity, confidently express what we care about and desire; at the same time, we have the opportunity to practice writing, practice expressing opinions and defending opinions by finding convincing arguments to prove...

Through letters, we can communicate and chat with friends all over the country and the world. When reading good letters with new, unique, and humane ideas, we feel more interested in reading books and our love for nature, our homeland, and our country is ignited," Thu Ngan expressed.

The female student said that the theme of this year's contest is very meaningful, evoking awareness and responsibility for the environment, especially the ocean. The sea is not only a source of life but also a place that preserves many cultural and historical values. But today, when standing in front of the blue sea, we not only see its inherent beauty but also realize that the "health" of the ocean is declining day by day...

“When writing the letter imagining ourselves as the ocean, we not only wanted to express our love for the ocean, but also wanted to call on everyone to join hands to keep the ocean blue and clear and forever be a source of life for future generations,” the female student shared.

The theme of the contest is associated with the goal of "Conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources" in the system of 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

With this year’s theme, students were transformed into the ocean to raise issues they are facing, the most prominent of which is marine pollution. They can use their soaring imagination and unlimited creativity to talk, confide, remind people about the role of the ocean as well as share solutions and specific actions to protect the ocean, sea and marine ecosystem; demonstrating the responsibility of humans, especially the young generation, in preserving nature for sustainable development.
