Americans fear political violence after Trump shooting

The attempted assassination of Mr. Trump while speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 caused shock both inside and outside the United States.

According to a poll conducted by YouGov in the US on July 14, the day after the shooting, 82% of Americans fear political violence, with 50% of adults saying political violence is a "very big problem" in the US and 32% saying political violence is "somewhat of a problem" in American society.

Just 2% of American adults in a recent YouGov survey disagreed with the majority, saying they felt political violence was not a problem in the country.

There are large age differences when it comes to this issue. While 37% of Americans aged 18-29 rate political violence as a “very big problem,” 63% of Americans aged 65 and older agree.

One explanation for this difference may be memories of the situation from the 1960s. For Americans who lived through the 1960s or were associated with that era in some way, the assassinations of important figures such as President John F. Kennedy, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy, generally represent some of the darkest days of that decade.

According to a July 14 YouGov survey of 4,339 American adults, 67% of respondents said the current political climate makes political violence "more likely" than usual.

The chaos took place on the evening of July 13 (local time) in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Mr. Trump was shot while holding a political campaign rally ahead of the Republican National Convention.

Mr. Trump said he was shot in the right ear but was fine. One person who attended the event was killed and two others were seriously injured. The FBI announced on July 14 that it was investigating the assassination as an act of domestic terrorism.

The dead spectator was identified as Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter. The attempted assassination stunned the nation and brought the tense race for the White House to a virtual standstill.

US President Joe Biden's re-election campaign team has quickly changed its strategy, stopping criticism of Mr. Trump to focus on a message of unity.

Within hours of the July 13 shooting, Mr. Biden’s campaign pulled television ads and suspended other political communications, including ads highlighting Mr. Trump’s May felony conviction in a New York state court related to paying hush money to a porn star.

“Unity is the most elusive goal, but nothing is more important than that right now… We must come together as a nation,” Biden said in a speech at the White House on July 14.

Mr. Biden condemned political violence, and asked Americans to "let the FBI do its job."

The shooter’s motive is unclear. The suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is a registered Republican, according to state voter records.

Mr Trump's Republican allies on July 13 portrayed him as a hero, using images of him with a bloody ear and a raised fist, mouthing what appeared to be a "Fight! Fight! Fight!"

In the short term, the shooting could provide a boost for Mr. Trump as he appears in Milwaukee this week at the Republican National Convention, where he will be formally nominated as his party’s presidential candidate.
