The urgent document of the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association sent by Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong, Chairman of the Association, to the Prime Minister stated the current situation: On August 1, 2023, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Official Dispatch 694/CD-TTg on preventing, detecting and strictly handling cases of illegal trading and transportation of pigs across the border into Vietnam.

Domestic livestock farmers are struggling because smuggled pigs, cows and chickens are still complicated.

However, after this dispatch, a number of media agencies, including VTC Digital Television, continued to report that the situation of pigs smuggled from Cambodia into Vietnam is still complicated, affecting domestic production, while increasing the risk of infection and spread of dangerous diseases.

In addition, according to many sources that the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association has, due to the time of the Lunar New Year, domestic consumption demand has increased, so the situation of smuggled pigs continues to increase dramatically. Specifically, in the weeks from January 1 to 15, 2024, on average, each night there are about 6,000 - 7,000 pigs from Cambodia smuggled into Vietnam through a number of border gates in the southeastern provinces and the southwestern border.

According to calculations, the number of smuggled pigs accounts for about 30% of domestic livestock production sold every day. With the selling price fluctuating around 50,000 VND/kg of live pigs, the profit from smuggled pigs is causing domestic farmers to face countless difficulties, having to sell below production cost, not only that, it also causes the risk of spreading disease, in the future it will seriously affect the total herd, causing a shortage of domestic supply.

In particular, during the recent past, the domestic livestock industry has been under a lot of pressure from the epidemic... production below cost has resulted in losses, even many farms or livestock households have had to reduce their herds or stop production, but they have still made efforts to overcome difficulties, contributing and supplying many safe food products to society, creating jobs for farmers, contributing to social security and essential foods. Therefore, with this official dispatch, the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association earnestly recommends that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development direct the relevant agencies to establish working groups to inspect and urge the control of veterinary forces in localities, preventing the illegal transportation and trade of pigs into Vietnam on the border, border gates, trails, and openings.

"Once again, the Dong Nai Province Livestock Association respectfully hopes that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development will pay attention and give timely instructions," Mr. Cong earnestly said.
