As one of the historical witnesses, as well as the person who contributed his efforts and intelligence to the glorious history of the Vietnam Oil and Gas industry, Mr. Ngo Thuong San's entire life is a series of continuous contributions on the journey of "finding the fire and keeping the fire" for the development of the industry and the cause of building and developing the country.
Currently, although he is 86 years old, Mr. Ngo Thuong San still continues his "journey of spreading the fire", educating traditions, sharing knowledge and experience for the development of the Oil and Gas industry.
Born into an intellectual family in Soc Trang, both parents participated in the resistance war, at the age of 15, Mr. Ngo Thuong San gathered in the North under the program of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee to select children of revolutionary families to create conditions for them to study in the North. In 1956, at the age of 18, he was sent by the Party and State to study in the Soviet Union to train intellectuals to serve the country's construction.
In 1962, Mr. Ngo Thuong San was 24 years old, graduated from the Moscow Geological University, and was assigned to work at the State Science Committee. Here, he and a number of his colleagues were the first graduate students in geology to be sent for official training in the Soviet Union and began their scientific research with the first research topic being the tectonics of the Northeast region, focusing on studying minerals, especially oil and gas in this area.
After that, the State Science Committee was divided into the State Science and Technology Committee and the Vietnam Academy of Science. According to his wishes, Mr. Ngo Thuong San was assigned to the Vietnam Academy of Science by Mr. Tran Quynh, then Deputy Head of the State Science Committee. When the General Department of Geology established a petroleum geological research team (Team 36) to conduct research on the structure and petroleum potential in the An Chau basin (Northeast Vietnam), with his expertise and previous research on this area, Mr. Ngo Thuong San was assigned to coordinate with the General Department of Geology to research An Chau, from 1965 until 1970, 1971.
After completing his research on An Chau, Mr. Ngo Thuong San moved on to research in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, including Ha Long Bay. At the same time, in the period of 1973-1974, the Committee agreed to ask Mr. Ngo Thuong San to participate in research and collect documents on the oil and gas prospects of the southern continental shelf, in preparation for the development of the oil and gas industry after the liberation of the South.

When the country was unified in 1975, Secretary of the Central Office for Southern Vietnam Pham Hung had a policy of selecting Southern cadres to return to build their homeland. Together with a number of cadres at that time, Mr. Dao Duy Chu (cadre of the State Planning Committee), Mr. Vu Trong Duc (cadre of the General Department of Chemicals), Mr. Ho Dac Hoai (cadre of the General Department of Geology), Mr. Ngo Thuong San was sent to the South to collect documents from the US and the Saigon government on oil and gas and to make a comprehensive assessment of the oil and gas potential of the southern continental shelf of Vietnam.
In less than 2 months, his team completed the task and around the end of July 1975, Mr. Ngo Thuong San was assigned to represent the team to report to the Politburo on the assessment of potential and division of oil and gas prospect areas on the continental shelf of Southern Vietnam. The team's report was highly appreciated, strengthening the confidence of the Party and State leaders in the development of the Vietnam Oil and Gas industry. This was also the report used by the Central Committee and was the basis for the decision to establish the General Department of Oil and Gas, and also the basis for the Politburo to decide on the development of the Oil and Gas industry, as an economic driving force to build the country after the war.
In 1976, Mr. Ngo Thuong San was transferred from the Vietnam Academy of Science to the General Department of Oil and Gas, in the South called the South Vietnam Oil and Gas Company, in charge of the company's technology. Later, when the Vietnam - Russia Joint Venture Vietsovpetro was established in 1980, he was assigned as Deputy General Director of the Joint Venture in charge of geology, exploration, prospecting and exploitation in general.
At Vietsovpetro, in his role, he made positive contributions to the search and exploitation of oil in fractured granite basement rocks at Bach Ho field, opening a new page for the oil and gas industry and our country's economy. This was also the first time in the world that oil was discovered and exploited in granitoid basement rocks. Previously, scientific data showed that granitoid and volcanic rocks do not have organic matter to produce oil. And through this project, Vietnam made an important contribution to world oil and gas science by building a method system to effectively and optimally exploit the oil layer in fractured basement rocks at Bach Ho field with super reserves, in the basement alone over 4 billion barrels and high-speed exploitation with a peak output of over 13 million tons/year. This result has made an important contribution to solving the energy crisis, reviving the country's economy after the war, and was also the driving force for economic growth that started the country's renovation period and has made important contributions that last until today.
With the positive contributions of the scientific work cluster "Searching, discovering and effectively exploiting oil bodies in the pre-Tertiary granitoid basement of the Cuu Long basin, Vietnam's continental shelf" in the history of the Vietnamese Oil and Gas industry, as well as for the world's Oil and Gas science, Mr. San and the group of authors were awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology by the State for this work.
Bach Ho mine with super reserves is still making great contributions to the country to this day.
When the Soviet Union transferred the leadership of the Vietsovpetro Joint Venture to Vietnam, in 1990 the position of General Director of Vietsovpetro was transferred to a Vietnamese person and Mr. Ngo Thuong San was also the first Vietnamese person to assume the position of General Director of the Joint Venture.
In 1993, Mr. San was assigned the additional task of Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation, now the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam). In 1996, he was transferred to Hanoi to serve as General Director of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation until his retirement in 2001. In every position, he worked with a spirit of dedication, daring to think, daring to do with a pure heart for the country; contributing to the great achievements of the industry, forming a synchronous and modern system of oil and gas infrastructure with important works and projects to create a sustainable and long-term development resource for the oil and gas industry, as well as contributing to the formation of industries and economic zones of the country.
It can be said that throughout his life, Mr. Ngo Thuong San has always burned with a "flame of enthusiasm" to constantly contribute to the Oil and Gas industry and to the development of the country. From the first steps on the "journey to find the fire" to the work of preserving and developing that fire. Even when he retired, or now at the age of 86, he is still tirelessly "passing on the fire" with the desire to keep the oil and gas fire burning brightly in the East Sea and in the hearts of every oil and gas worker; contributing to the preservation and further development of the achievements of the industry as wished by Uncle Ho; worthy of the trust, solidarity and support of the Party, the Government and the people for the development of the industry.
