Automotive Engineering industry after 5 years of graduation can earn 25-45 million

Automotive Engineering students can repair, maintain, participate in designing and assembling cars with a starting salary of 5-16 million VND, doubling or tripling after 5 years.

Colleges of technology and engineering say that automobile-related majors have been gaining interest in the past few years. So what are the benchmark scores, tuition fees, and future earnings, according to universities?

At Hanoi University of Industry, the benchmark score for the Automotive Engineering Technology major in the past three years has always fluctuated around 25 points, according to the method of considering high school graduation exam scores. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education has a similar benchmark score for this major, ranging from 25.35 to 27.5. Without priority points, candidates must achieve 8-9 points per subject to be admitted.

The admission score for the Automotive Engineering major at the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, is second only to the Computer and Information Technology majors. In 2022, the benchmark score for this major is 60.13/100 based on the combined admission criteria.

The development speed of the field is also rapid with new technologies such as cruise control, active braking, controlled steering, and autonomous vehicles. Therefore, businesses have a great demand for high-quality human resources.

Curriculum

Dr. Tran Huu Nhan, Head of the Faculty of Traffic Engineering, University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that the automobile-related majors in general have two training directions. Some schools focus on technology, specifically training skills in diagnosis, maintenance, repair and services related to automobiles. University of Technology focuses on engineering, training in-depth knowledge and skills in the fields of simulation calculation, design of improved features of automobile systems, specialized automobile types, and automobile production and manufacturing techniques.

At Hanoi University of Industry, students majoring in Automotive Engineering Technology are also equipped with basic knowledge of design, operation and maintenance, quality control and business service knowledge. The modules in the training program are arranged according to knowledge: Power sources on cars, electrical and electronic systems on cars, Chassis systems on cars and auxiliary systems.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, students are trained in basic knowledge related to mechanical calculations, dynamics, design techniques and simulation calculations. If studying Automotive Engineering at the University of Transport, students have the option of becoming an engineer with a 5-year program (183 credits) in addition to the 4-year bachelor of engineering program (140 credits). In addition to specialized knowledge and soft skills, excellent students are sent for internships abroad.

With a technical training orientation, graduates of the Automotive Engineering major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology can work in the technical sector, design department, research, and product development in the general engineering field, not necessarily in companies related to automobiles.

In addition, Dr. Nhan said that many students in this field choose to study abroad at a higher level and return to teach in the automotive industry at universities, colleges, and intermediate schools.

Meanwhile, graduating from the Automotive Engineering Technology major at Hanoi University of Industry, students can take on the position of design engineer at domestic and foreign automobile manufacturing corporations, auto maintenance and repair technicians, inspectors, auto insurance appraisers or manage and operate related service facilities such as showrooms, auto manufacturing and assembly plants.

Similarly, the University of Transport said that bachelors or engineers in Automotive Engineering can work at automobile assembly plants, transportation companies, mechanical manufacturing companies, inspection bureaus or centers, and repair/maintenance facilities.

Salary

Students majoring in Automotive Engineering Technology who have just graduated from Hanoi University of Industry can receive a salary of 6-15 million VND per month. After 5 years, this salary improves to 15-25 million VND.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Nhan said that many students majoring in Automotive Engineering at Bach Khoa can immediately receive a salary of 15-16 million VND per month after graduation. After 3-5 years of accumulating experience in the profession, reaching the expert level, their income can double or triple or they can be invited to work in Germany or Japan with a high salary.

However, salary depends on many different factors such as professional capacity, skills, and work performance.

As a hot industry, attracting great attention from candidates in recent years, many universities and colleges that are not specifically technical also open the Automotive Engineering Technology major and enroll thousands of students each year.

Associate Professor Do Van Dung, former principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that with the current widespread recruitment methods, the auto industry's human resources may be saturated and redundant in the next few years.

"Many private schools enroll several thousand students each year, without ensuring the quality of training, practice facilities, and lecturers. Candidates should consider their interests and choose a reputable school, and should not register based on the trend," Mr. Dung advised.

Similarly, Dr. Tran Huu Nhan assessed that after a period of rapid growth in enrollment scale, this industry may decline in the next 4-5 years because supply exceeds demand. This rule has also occurred in the fields of economics , finance and banking.

"However, high-quality human resources in this industry still have a lot of potential, and are always sought after and recruited by large domestic and foreign companies and corporations," said Mr. Nhan.
