Russia announces repelling UAV attack on oil refinery

VnExpressVnExpress17/06/2023

Russian officials in Bryansk region said air defense systems shot down three Ukrainian UAVs targeting the Druzhba oil refinery.

"Russian air defenses repelled an overnight attack by Ukrainian troops on the Druzhba oil refinery, located in the Novozybkov district," Governor Alexander Bogomaz of the western Bryansk region, which borders Belarus and Ukraine, announced on June 17.

He said Russian air defenses shot down three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), but did not say whether the refinery or surrounding areas suffered any damage in the attack.

Russia’s Druzhba oil and gas pipeline system was built before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The southern branch of the system runs through Ukraine and has remained operational despite the conflict, supplying crude to Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Russia has recorded several UAV attacks in recent months, particularly targeting military fuel supply facilities.

Moscow has repeatedly accused the Ukrainian military of being behind attacks deep inside its territory, while Kiev rarely accepts responsibility and argues that there are internal conflicts in Russia.

Sergei Aksyonov, the head of the Russian-appointed government in Crimea, announced on June 15 that the Russian air force had shot down nine UAVs that had entered its airspace.

Last week, a drone crashed into a residential building in the southern Russian city of Voronezh, injuring at least two people. It was the first drone attack on Voronezh, a city deep in Russian territory with a population of about one million, since hostilities began in February 2022.
