The Kaliningrad region will receive 1.4 billion rubles ($16.2 million) in funding for the local shipping industry, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said at a Cabinet meeting in late July, Russian state news agencies reported.

"We will allocate an additional 1.4 billion rubles as directed by the Head of State (Russian President Vladimir Putin). This money will be used to finance the transportation of 500,000 tons of goods necessary for the development of the Kaliningrad Region," Mishustin said.

“We hope that such a decision will strengthen our country's transport connectivity, help create the basis for continued economic growth and, most importantly, for the growing prosperity of its people,” the Russian Prime Minister said.

The majority of cargo traffic with the Kaliningrad Region is by sea, and the availability of maritime transport infrastructure and services is essential to ensure the connection between the region and the entire country, Prime Minister Mishustin noted.

Located in the far west of Russia in Eastern Europe, Kaliningrad is an overseas territory of the Russian Federation. It is home to the only ice-free port on the Baltic Sea.

The port city is therefore vital to both Russia and the Baltic states in ensuring transport and trade across the region, where temperatures are often below zero for much of the winter.

Kaliningrad is also an important center for amber processing and trade. The region's abundance of amber has shaped the local economy and propelled it to the forefront of the global amber industry.

But beyond transport and trade, Kaliningrad is important to Russia because of its strategic depth.

It is home to the Russian Navy's Baltic Fleet, and is positioned as Moscow's westernmost territory, closest to the heart of Europe. In addition, Kaliningrad is sandwiched between two NATO member states, Lithuania and Poland.
