In Vietnam, ginger is an abundant source of raw materials, but it is mainly consumed fresh, so ginger is easily damaged and its price fluctuates seasonally, which is somewhat disadvantageous for farmers.
From that reality, a group of scientists at the High-tech Agricultural Enterprise Incubation Center (HCMC) have researched and extracted ginger essence to create high-value products.
Through collecting ginger samples and screening from localities such as Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Quang Nam, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, Binh Dinh and from Dak Lak to Ca Mau, the group of scientists identified 3 localities that can grow high quality ginger, producing good amounts of essential oil: Dak Nong, Dong Nai and Lam Dong provinces.
After harvesting, ginger is processed, cleaned and crushed, and dried ginger essence is extracted using supercritical CO2 liquid ginger essence nanotechnology to obtain valuable bioactive ingredients that are beneficial to health such as gingerol and shogaol. Thanks to the closed extraction process and advanced technology, the final product retains the natural flavor and quality of ginger. In addition, when combined with herbs as additives, the effectiveness of each product will be increased.
Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Diem, head of the research team, said that the strength of this method is the ability to preserve the natural flavor and quality of the extracted product.
Currently, the pharmaceutical industry is strongly shifting to using ingredients of natural origin, ginger root is also being researched by many countries in the world for its potential application in supporting treatment. And the group has completed the research of 3 products that can be commercialized: Sagucha oral spray essential oil, Sagucha lemongrass ginger instant tea, Sagucha steam essential oil. These are health protection products, serving daily life, with a fairly large consumer market.
“Not only commercializing the product, we are willing to transfer the technology process and specialized equipment to process ginger essence and other herbal essential oils on a large scale,” Ms. Ngoc Diem shared.
