On October 22, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases reported on the treatment of the only survivor of the flash flood and landslide in Cao Bang last September.
Accordingly, patient NVN, 29 years old in Nguyen Binh, Cao Bang was swept away and buried by flash floods on his way home. He was seriously injured with multiple injuries to the skull, a fractured left femur and a broken left arm.
Mr. N was taken to the emergency room by local residents. On September 11, the patient was transferred to a higher-level medical facility for brain surgery. However, 3 days after surgery, the patient developed a continuous high fever with lethargy, and a lumbar puncture showed abnormalities. Dr. Nguyen Hong Long, Deputy Head of the Department of General Infections, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that the patient was transferred to the hospital in a serious condition of purulent meningitis after brain surgery.
The patient was diagnosed with: Purulent meningitis/multiple trauma - traumatic brain injury - fracture of the lower third of the left femur, fracture of the lower third of the left forearm radius. After receiving the patient, doctors from many specialties consulted and provided emergency care.
" Fortunately, the patient's condition responded well to the treatment, so after a week of emergency care, the patient's fever was gone and inflammation indicators returned to normal, " said Dr. Long.
When the purulent meningitis was stable, the patient underwent surgery to fuse the fracture of the lower third of the radius of the left forearm and the fracture of the lower third of the left femur.
According to Dr. Nguyen Giang An, Department of Orthopedic Trauma and Spinal Neurology, the fracture was very complicated with many broken bone fragments, so the doctors decided to use screws to fix the femur and radius, compress the fracture to fix it together, and separate the soft tissue to avoid damaging the blood vessels that nourish the bone at the lowest level to help the bone heal as quickly as possible.
The surgery took two hours. Seven days after the surgery, the patient recovered very well and was transferred to the Department of Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation for early rehabilitation of the left arm and left leg.
Dr. Le Nguyen Long, Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Rehabilitation, said: Here, patients are treated to restore motor function and stretch the muscles in the femur and forearm after surgery. With the method of exercise through massage therapy combined with acupuncture to minimize muscle atrophy and joint stiffness, patients quickly have feeling and gradually move gently in the left arm and left leg.
The patient's health is gradually recovering and he is being transferred to a specialized hospital to prepare for the next skull transplant surgery.
