Male Polytechnic student graduated with perfect score, lecturer exclaimed: 'Extremely rare'

Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that since the school switched to credit-based training, only The An and another student majoring in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering achieved this score. Thus, in all subjects, The An achieved an A.

The male student said he had predicted this result early on. “I feel very happy, even though this is not a very big achievement. That gives me more motivation to continue pursuing my studies and research in the future,” An said.

The An, born in 2002, was the valedictorian of the A1 block of Bac Ninh province in 2020. At that time, the male student scored 29.1 points, not including bonus points, ranking 5th in the country. With this score, An was admitted to the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

The male student said that when he first entered the school, he did not set a goal of becoming valedictorian because he knew that the Polytechnic program was very heavy and difficult. But early on, he planned to get the school's scholarship to encourage learning.

“At Bách khoa, the lowest scholarship will be equal to the tuition fee; the higher scholarship will be 1.5 times the tuition fee. My study program is one of the majors with the highest tuition fees in the school, about 50-60 million VND/year. Therefore, I want to win a scholarship to help my parents not have to bear the additional burden of tuition fees,” Thế An said.

There was no barrier because the program had to be taught entirely in English due to the previous foundation, but in the beginning, An also found it difficult to adapt because "each subject is a different area of knowledge". To achieve high scores, students need to have a firm grasp of the subject content.

“There are theoretical subjects where the number of lecture slides from teachers is up to thousands of pages, such as Operating Systems or Computer Architecture… To understand the content of the lesson, I often have to preview the slides provided, then go to class to continue listening to the teacher's lecture.”

According to An, students should not take lightly or ignore any knowledge content but must learn it all. In fact, students should expand their knowledge through books, research on the Internet and do many exercises to remember longer.

Exam preparation should also be planned early, about a month before the exam so as not to miss any content. “The first few semesters may be a bit difficult, but once you get used to the university way of studying, the following semesters will be much easier,” An said.

Despite consistently getting A’s in all subjects, An said: “Studying at Bách khoa, I never dared to be complacent. To get an all-A transcript, in addition to effort, many other factors are needed, including luck. The more so, the more pressured I am if I happen to not get an A in a subject, I will be very sad.”

But in the third year, when he started participating in the machine learning research lab of Associate Professor, Dr. Than Quang Khoat (School of Information and Communication Technology, Hanoi University of Science and Technology), The An gradually realized that scores are not everything.

“The artificial intelligence industry is now developing rapidly, constantly requiring high-quality human resources. Therefore, students also need to learn how to research and improve their knowledge base. In fact, many of my classmates may not have as high scores, but they do very good research. At that time, I realized that I still had a lot to learn.”

Aiming to pursue a research career, in parallel with studying, from year 3, An started actively researching and implementing assigned topics at the lab. Currently, An has 2 co-authored articles that are being reviewed at the International Conference on Neural Network Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024).

As An's companion and research guide at the lab, Dr. Ngo Van Linh (Faculty of Computer Science, School of Information Technology and Communications) assessed that An always showed seriousness and diligence, constantly proactively exploring and proposing creative ideas.

“An has a scientific working style, paying attention to even the smallest details. When receiving a research topic, he always spends a lot of time synthesizing and reflecting on related articles, asking himself questions and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of existing methods. From there, he will come up with ideas to improve and create new, more effective methods. I think these qualities will be a solid foundation for him on his long-term research path,” said Dr. Ngo Van Linh.

Dr. Linh also commented that An's achievement of CPA 4.0/4.0 at Bach Khoa "is extremely rare".

The Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program is taught in English by leading professors from both the country and abroad. “To maintain the maximum score in such a rigorous environment shows that An is an excellent all-round student,” said Dr. Linh.

Currently, An is an artificial intelligence research engineer at FPT Software's Artificial Intelligence Center. During this time, the 10X hopes to focus on research to achieve certain results, then continue to "apply" for a doctoral scholarship abroad.

“Although the human resources in the artificial intelligence industry are increasing, there is still a shortage of high-quality human resources. Therefore, I think this will be the path to help me be more competitive in the labor market,” An said.
