The aid includes $200 million in equipment from existing U.S. military stocks that will be delivered quickly to the battlefield, the U.S. Department of Defense said in a statement. The remaining $1.5 billion is for new orders that will take longer to reach Ukrainian forces.
The aid will provide Ukraine with a variety of anti-aircraft shells to counter Russian attacks, artillery shells, ammunition for HIMARS precision missile launchers and various anti-tank weapons, among other capabilities.

In a social media post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was "extremely grateful" to his US counterpart Joe Biden, the US Congress and the American people for this help.
The aid includes items “critical to strengthening Ukraine’s defense forces, as well as funding to maintain previously committed equipment from the United States,” he said.
On July 29, Mr. Zelenskyy visited special forces in the Kharkiv border region, where Moscow’s forces launched a surprise ground offensive in May but failed to make a breakthrough. There, he “saw firsthand how the continuous support” from the United States allowed Ukrainian forces to resist Russian attacks.
The United States is a major military backer of Ukraine, pledging more than $55 billion in weapons, ammunition and other security assistance since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in February 2022.
Now in their third year of fighting, neither Russia nor Ukraine has been able to turn the conflict in their favor, but Moscow's forces have made gains in recent months.
