On February 21, US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum requiring increased restrictions on Chinese investment in strategic US sectors, including technology and critical infrastructure, through expanding the authority of the foreign investment review committee.

The move comes amid growing trade tensions and strategic competition between the world's two largest economies.
According to the White House, the new measure aims to promote foreign investment while protecting US national security interests "especially against threats from foreign adversaries" such as China.
The memo criticized China for “increasingly leveraging US capital to develop and modernize its military, intelligence, and other security apparatuses.”
The document asks the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) - the body with the authority to review the national security impact of foreign investments in the US - to tighten controls on Chinese investment in key sectors such as technology, critical infrastructure, healthcare and energy.
The memo was issued after Mr Trump imposed an additional 10% tariff on all goods imported from China earlier this month, citing Beijing’s role in the trafficking of deadly fentanyl.
China has denied the accusation. Later, in a speech on February 18, the US President left open the possibility of reaching a trade agreement with China.
