US President Joe Biden on November 22 declared a state of emergency over lead-contaminated water in the US Virgin Islands, after tests in St. Croix showed lead levels in water 100 times higher than the limit set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
According to AP, this is one of the worst contamination incidents to hit a US community in decades. Officials asked people to stop using tap water and started giving out coupons to buy bottled water.
Officials conducted routine tests on residential taps in September that followed EPA lead testing rules. The results showed the water was safe. But island residents say the color has gotten worse.
Experts say the test results may be false because they do not meet EPA standards.
