Hanoi Giang Vo Secondary School won half of the Ba Dinh district's excellent student awards, including all 5 first prizes in Math.
The five students who won first prize in Math included two students with the same name Nguyen Tung Lam, Nguyen Thien Nhan (students of class 9A4), Tran Hoang Dang Khoa, Do Nguyen Gia Khanh (class 9A3).
"Last year, the school won three first prizes. This year's achievements are higher, exceeding the expectations of both teachers and students," said Ms. Vu Minh Nguyet, a math teacher at Giang Vo Secondary School, who is also in charge of the math team.
Ms. Nguyet said that students with a natural aptitude for math are discovered by the school and encouraged to join the math club from grade 6. According to Ms. Nguyet, interacting and learning with friends who share the same passion will motivate students very quickly. About every two months, the club's teachers will give students a test to assess their abilities.
Around September, when the district-level excellent student exam is approaching, the students in the team will be trained two afternoons each week to consolidate their knowledge.
Nguyen Thien Nhan, a student who scored 19.75/20 points, said that in addition to studying with his teacher, he often reads books and does math exercises during recess, and spends a few days a week studying extra. In the evening, Nhan studies other subjects to ensure his classwork.
"I don't think I'll get a near-perfect score, I just hope to be able to join the city's excellent student team and win a prize," Nhan said, adding that he wants to take the entrance exam to grade 10 at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and major in Natural Sciences.
Nguyen Hoang Dang Khoa usually spends three hours a day studying Math. On days when he has free time in the afternoon, he spends more time. Khoa assessed that the most difficult part of the exam was the combination test.
"This part is usually placed at the end of the exam, and is long, so it needs to be read and analyzed carefully. I often do this part last, so I'm under time pressure, but luckily I don't lose too many points," Khoa said.

In this year's 9th grade excellent student exam, Ba Dinh district awarded 562 prizes, equivalent to 60% of the total number of students taking the exam. In Math alone, the whole district had 59 prizes, of which Giang Vo school students won 27 prizes. In some other subjects such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, the school's prize winning rate was also over 40%.
Mr. Le Duc Thuan, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Ba Dinh District, assessed that the achievements of Giang Vo Secondary School were achieved thanks to a long preparation process. From the time students enter the school, they will be divided into classes and encouraged to participate in clubs that are suitable for their abilities and personal and family development orientation, ensuring that learning is directed towards developing abilities.
Students who win prizes at the district level will continue to practice to participate in the second round of selection, taking 10 students from each subject to participate in the city's excellent student exam, held in early 2024.
"We are focusing on the second round of the exam, so that all excellent students can be on the city team and win prizes," said Ms. Nguyet.
