Being invited and enticed to do the job of checking online order codes, a student was scammed of more than 100 million VND, and is at risk of having to drop out of school to work to pay off the debt.

Deposit money and get profit immediately

Master Cao Quang Tu, Director of Admissions at Saigon International University, said that recently, the story of a student being scammed out of hundreds of millions of dong when doing the job of "checking order codes" online, the school confirmed that the scammed person was actually a student of the school.

Specifically, this student received a Facebook message from a stranger inviting him to become a collaborator checking order codes, with a fixed salary of 250,000-300,000 VND/day plus commission.

Text messages enticing students to work make them lose hundreds of millions of dong

Seeing that the personal page had a decent profile picture and an easy job with a high salary, this student agreed and was transferred to another person to guide him on how to do it. Accordingly, the student would create an account and fill in the information, including the bank account number.

At first, this person gave the student a few orders worth only a few hundred thousand dong and asked the student to deposit the money into the account. After a while, the student received the principal and interest back. The following orders continued to increase in amount and the student still received the full amount.

Seeing that they don't have to do anything, just deposit money and then get paid both principal and interest, students eagerly "check the order code" without wondering what the order is, why after depositing money, after just a few hours, they get back such an unreasonably large amount of money.

"The value of the order increased as time went on. Once, this person gave an order of 9 million VND and told the student to deposit money, the profit would be very large. The student said he did not have enough money to deposit, this person immediately transferred the missing amount of 1.2 million VND to the student to have the full 9 million. This action made the student trust him more and immediately transfer the money," Master Tu shared.

However, after depositing money, the account was "suspended", and neither the principal nor the interest was returned. When the student asked, this person said that because the deposit was not made within the 30-second deadline, the account was locked. After that, the student could no longer contact this person.

Knowing that he had been scammed, the student went to Tik Tok to seek help to get his money back, because he had previously read comments saying "I also lost my money, message me and I will show you how to get it back". The student then texted an account, and was introduced to a lawyer on Facebook.

The person claiming to be a lawyer said that the student had to pay the fees to get back the money he had lost. The amount of money the student transferred to the 'lawyer' kept increasing, from 15 million, 30 million VND, then 40 million VND. Every time the amount increased, the student asked why the amount kept increasing, and the 'lawyer' replied that it was because of taxes or late payment, because the payment time was only 15 minutes.

"Every time, the student borrowed money from friends to pay. In the end, the 'lawyer' could not be contacted. The total amount of money the student lost was more than 100 million and this was also the amount of money the student owed his friends. Knowing that he could not solve the problem himself, the student had to inform his parents. Because the amount was so large, the student intended to temporarily stop studying to work to pay off the debt," Master Tu informed.

Warning from the beginning of the school year

After the above incident, the Saigon International University Youth Union posted on information channels to warn students.

The warning reads as follows:

" Currently, fraud targeting students is on the rise, especially through online and in-person forms. Fraudsters often take advantage of students' lack of experience, trust, or financial needs to commit fraud.

Some common forms of fraud today:

Recruitment scams: Post attractive job vacancies but ask students to pay a deposit, application fee or provide personal information.

Fake online sales: Advertise products at surprisingly low prices, but after receiving money, do not deliver the product or deliver poor quality products.

Impersonating school officials or authorities: Calling to ask for tuition payment, fines, or to provide important personal information.

Financial investment, virtual currency: Enticing to participate in investment with the promise of high profits, but in fact it is a multi-level scam model.

Regarding the extra work of checking online order codes, at first the subject will let you do the job easily, conveniently, check successful orders and receive money immediately. After that, the order value gradually increases to millions, tens of millions, forcing you to deposit money to perform and receive attractive salary + discount. However, after the transaction of a large amount of money, you will be blocked by the subjects and not paid back.

Note: When encountering cases like the above, you ABSOLUTELY must not follow, report to the authorities for handling, share information about the scammer so that everyone can be vigilant .

According to Master Cao Quang Tu, nowadays, scams are becoming more and more sophisticated and target inexperienced students who want to earn money and easily believe in easy jobs with high salaries. "At the beginning of the year, teachers always warn students but they are still not vigilant and get scammed," said Master Tu.
